No one wants a civil war. The last one was horrific in the age of one shot and reload muskets with limited range. Imagine one in the time of automatic, semi-automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns, much less anti-tank weapons, modern artillery and explosives.

Not even that. Firstly, you've left out rural. Secondly, you will have battles within cities... neighborhood, blocks, apartment buildings. Same will happen in suburbs.

Don’t know about that. A whole bunch of people would have no problem declaring California a seditious state, followed by the appointment of a military governor, as outlined in the 1867-68 Reconstruction Act.
