Allowing this to stand will set a very dangerous precedent. Prosecutors will be able to browbeat defendants into pleading guilty to all sorts of things which aren’t actually crimes.

Prosecutors do it all the time.
If I was facing 60+ years in prison on tax fraud charges I would admit to being part of the JFK assassination conspiracy to get a lenient sentence ... even though I wasn't even born yet in 1963.

Yeah - just like in the Soviet Union of old. Though it COULD be that they want that smear out NOW in time to tamper with the fall election cycle, knowing it'll probably be sorted and thrown out on appeal to higher court(s)later anyway. It's obvious they want to generate all the bad news they can get, and fast.
