I believe you are both correct, but unfortunately, I have yet to see the intellect in the GOP senate candidates necessary to grasp this. They, like all politicians, are too self absorbed.

I think this is one difference between the parties. D’s think longer term. When they were forcing Obamacare down our throats, they knew they were going to lose lots of Senate and House seats but could look ahead to 2030 when Obamacare’s failures lead to full-fledged socialized medicine. So it was a huge long-term win for which they too short-term losses.
It seem like Republicans are just looking at the next election in their state for their seat and don’t care much about the enormous strategic value of not having the judiciary be fist of Che Guevara’s revolution in the US for next 20 years.
This is an appointment you shove down D throats the same way they did Obamacare BECAUSE it is so important.
