I think the goal here is to get Ford (or this new accuser) to testify under penalty of perjury, which they won't do, which then will destroy the #MeToo Movement and the Borking of future SCOTUS choices by Republicans.
Having Grassley backpedal and give the Dems what they want is good optics for the public. Disregard that Fox News poll - that doesn't mean squat.

- Republicans will hold the House and gain seats in the Senate
- Ginsburg, disgusted at the process (she already denounced the tactics against Kavanaugh) will step down (or may pass away) during or after the SCOTUS session

Trump should have a couple of "wild card" judges -- probably older guys with long careers in Federal court roles -- in his back pocket who would be willing to accept recess appointments that would not expire until December 31st, 2020.
If any nomination gets stalled, just put the recess appointee in there temporarily. After all the ridiculous allegations against the "real" nominee are investigated, just have the recess appointee step down and confirm the "real" one quickly.
