I have always been perplexed why our airpower didn’t destroy the poppy fields in Afghanistan. Can someone please enlighten me? It seemed like an obvious solution to me.
Because people were getting rich off the drugs. That has to have been known for years.
My understanding is that poppies are very resilient. Seem like you could spray them with something like a weed killer but it wouldn’t be a one time fix. You’d have to stay on it continuously.
One thing that would be necessary to start, is to map where all the fields are. I think some of the new imagery technology out there can identify plant types to some degree so global aerial mapping of poppy fields, by satellite or aircraft, would be a start. (I am pretty sure that our DEA already does this here in the USA to locate marijuana crops)
