Not very different, which is why Joe Miller should steel himself for yet another primary challenge against her in 2022. But this time, because of Murkowski’s apostasy, he will have the GOPe’s support, while she will get zero GOPe funding. And her vote on Kavanaugh will likely lead R’s to vote against her.

It counts as a non-vote so we can win 50-49.

A no vote would add to the Dems. Present at least dosen’t add to their total.

Really good question. I wonder what the Senate rules are when the vote is 49 to 48?

Voting present does not get counted as a no
That means if no one defects the dems have 49. With Murkowski voting present then they will never reached 50.

For passage the majority of senators PRESENT must vote for a bill or nominee. A vote could be 50-49 with one voting present and not pass.

For every vote of ‘present’ instead of ‘no’, there are fewer ‘yeas’ needed.

100 Senators. One votes present, you now only need 50 votes to win, not 51 (50-49, I’m ignoring that ties are still wins). Three vote present, a score of 49-48 will get you the win.

A Present vote doesn’t really help, but it doesn’t hurt either.
