WASHINGTON Former House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he was wrong about marijuana when he opposed legalizing the drug while serving in Congress.
Boehner predicted that national cannabis legalization is going to happen in less than five years.
That sound bite about being unalterably opposed to cannabis is almost a decade old. Back then, like a lot of folks, I was getting faulty information, Boehner said of his 2011 remark during todays American Cannabis Summit online seminar organized by the National Institute for Cannabis Investors.
I realized I was wrong and, let me tell you, Ive been having more and more meetings with my friends and colleagues on the Hill about this some of the most conservative politicians around and their views are evolving on cannabis, too, just like the American people, he added.
Boehner told the story of a veteran he met who turned to cannabis for pain relief.
One of the turning points for me was when I met this Navy SEAL, honorably served our country for 20 years. He suffered horrible concussions and more concussions and after he got out he kept getting serious migraines, he couldnt see straight, he couldnt think straight. The VA prescribed him all these hardcore drugs and he tells me I dont want all these drugs, Ive got a wife and kids and I want to be a father. So he refused to take his medication; he was just suffering, Boehner said.

Alcohol reduces your inhibitions and sometimes allows you to make stupid or evil decisions. But when you sober up the effect is gone. With marijuana, each time there is a residual that builds up until you do stupid or evil things without the marijuana. Essentially chipping away at your conscience until there is none. Until you are 26, that part of your brain is still developing and can be affected to a greater degree.
Feds shouldn’t make drug laws. Let States decide.
The controlled substance act needs to be completely revised. Feds should only be involved in cases that involve interstate or international drug trafficking.
Probably gets a better high than from his wine
Source?
What has the supremacy clause got to do with federal overreach? Big fan of Roe v. Wade, are you? It required a Constitutional amendment to prohibit alcohol consumption. Why not “dope?”
Then lets bring back alcohol prohibition. That was a smashing success.
How do you feel about booze and cigarettes?
I would be a very happy man if all we argued about was legal marijuana. Thats not reality. If conservative American make it states rights issue in exchange for the same for the hearing protection act. Or something close on the freedom side of the debate. Then do it!!!!! Save us from the nanny state.
Ha ha, you're right, I mixed up my Ohio RINOs. John Kasich's father was the mailman, John Boehner's father owned a family bar.
Inhaling it isn’t the only way to get it into your system.
Because prohibition has been so effective.
True. But unfortunately smoking seems to be by far the preferred method of use, which will add to the toll taken lung cancer.
No kidding. It is legal in my state. I bought it for pain and sleep issues. I don’t use it for recreation.
Could they please do something about the cost? I had to pay $199 for a half oz. The tax on that was $38! Who carries that amount of cash around? The ATM costs $3, and the amount distributed only goes to $200. I had to hit the ATM for another $3 to get the additional $37 in cash! Expensive on a fixed income! Ticks me off. It is 100% pure, but I can’t afford that. Highway robbery.
Because it almost always comes back to bite you on the butt.
I'm on a road trip to Arizona to sell a house. Pot's legal here with a card. Which anybody can get. So legal pot.
I live in Florida and it's legal there to vape marijuana oils with a card. The next initiative on the ballot will legalize real pot. Buds bought from a dispensary. Just like in Arizona. Again legal pot.
Colorado, California and who knows how many more states (fill-in the blanks) have already legalized it's use.
And this trend and demand is expanding, not shrinking. Which means more states will legalize it, not fewer.
So to say it's never going to happen in this country is ignoring the facts on the ground. It's already happening.
So I agree that the trend is in favor of national legalization of marijuana. But to get a decent job, you have to pass a drug test, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
