An Antarctic researcher at a remote Russian science station has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing his colleague in a sudden outburst of violence.

According to Russia’s Interfax news agency, Sergey Savitsky attacked his fellow scientist on October 9, possibly after suffering an emotional breakdown, stabbing him at least once.

The two men had been living and working together for six months at Russia’s Bellingshausen station on King George Island, more than 500 miles off the southern coast of Argentina.

I think I’ve heard, that some Antarctic work stations, screen people who want to go there; screen them for emotional stability among other factors. The isolation and environment there can cause problems.

I hope NASA has done the same, for those who have stayed for long periods on the space station. And that they consider for issues such as planned trips to Mars.

I had volunteered for a USN Deep Freeze in 1957 or 58 and I believe I had to take the same ‘personality’ test that I did as a Submarine Volunteer in 1961.

I used to say I was SANE and had the paper to prove it BUT as I got older I realized that these tests were REALLY to determine if one was crazy enough to put oneself in the position of sinking a large steel tube, or swim 20 miles in full gear and pack, jump out of a perfectly sound airplane etc etc etc
