Climate change: Oceans 'soaking up more heat than estimated' (barf alert)
BBC News ^ | 1st November 2018 | BBC News

Researchers say that the world has seriously underestimated the amount of heat soaked up by our oceans over the past 25 years.

Their study suggests that the seas have absorbed 60% more than previously thought.

They say it means the Earth is more sensitive to fossil fuel emissions than estimated.

This could make it much more difficult to to keep global warming within safe levels this century.

What have the researchers found?

According to the last major assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world's oceans have taken up over 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases.

But this new study says that every year, for the past 25 years, we have put about 150 times the amount of energy used to generate electricity globally into the seas - 60% more than previous estimates.

That's a big problem.

Scientists base their predictions about how much the Earth is warming by adding up all the excess heat that is produced by the known amount of greenhouse gases that have been emitted by human activities.

This new calculation shows that far more heat than we thought has been going into oceans. But it also means that far more heat than we thought has been generated by the warming gases we have emitted.

Therefore more heat from the same amount of gas means the Earth is more sensitive to CO2.

What are the implications of the finding?

The researchers involved in the study believe the new finding will make it much harder to keep within the temperature rise targets set by governments in the Paris agreement. Recently the IPCC spelled out clearly the benefits to the world of keeping below the lower goal of 1.5C relative to pre-industrial levels.

This new study says that will be very difficult indeed.

I keep a couple of 1/2 gallon milk jugs filled with water in my freezer when it doesn’t have much food in it——I only fill them about 80% or the bottle top will be knocked right off——after the freezing takes place.

REAL scientists knew this over 30 years ago ... I still remember a REAL scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research telling me this exact thing over 30 years ago ... the fake ones just chose to leave this out of their fake “models” ...

The heat capacity of water is well known and studied under thermodynamics. If the oceans are absorbing more heat it would mean one of two things. 1. There is another source of heat that we are not factoring in, or 2. The fundamental molecular structure of water has changed to allow it to take on more heat.

There is also a 3rd option and that is the scientists do not know what they are talking about and their math is way off and their data is incomplete.

“It is fraud. It is theft. It should be treated as such.”

Good post but you left out “control.” But fraud and theft does establish control so your post is accurate. It is really all about control by government!

....so the science isn’t settled?

I thought climate change scientists were never wrong.

Regarding ocean heat, have global warming alarmists considered underwater volcanos?

Last week it was the quiet sun. This week the oceans are soaking up all the sun’s heat. Next week it will be cow farts...

#2. You beat me to it. Volcanoes do not obey manmade rules on heat ejections. Nor do under-seas thermal vents.

A little knowledge of REAL SCIENCE would go a long way to shutting up the pompous “scientists” and “science reporters” (a contradiction in terms way too often today).

Oh, they forgot to add in Whale piss. It’s a real heat changer.

No. Water contracts as it cools reaching a minimum at 4 C. Below that temperature it begins freezing and expands.

One sure fire way to prevent glowbull worming, is to send all the people worried about it on a rocket to the sun to turn down the thermostat.

Surely one of them will succeed! It's for the future of humanity! Volunteer today!

Not bad. Only off by over half. At least you were some where in the ballpark.

so is this an admission that all of their mathematical models have been wrong?

Absolutely... And if the oceans are indeed warming then they are extracting heat from a source which will in turn cool that source. The atmosphere is that source.

I remember reading a si-fi story back in the 1960s, about a mad scientist who planned to melt the ice caps and flood the earth.
His method was he was going to blow up underwater cliffs that blocked the gulf stream from going farther north into the Arctic.

Every time I ear the ice caps are melting I remember this novel.

Can’t remember the name of it.

It also reveals the impracticality of trying to intentionally control the climate system. The climate will do what the climate will do.

Cut down the emissions of toxins into the water and air. That we know is a good idea. The rest is reading tea leaves.

Most politicians can't even make it rain...

but they can fix the climate and impose ideal conditions if we just give them money and power.

It sounds like some kind of cult.

I'm skeptical...

but I will plant a tree.
