Germanys foreign minister said Berlin has banned 18 Saudi nationals from entering Europes border-free Schengen zone because they are believed connected to Khashoggis killing.
The German government says it has halted previously approved arms exports to Saudi Arabia amid the fallout from the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Germany said a month ago it wouldnt approve any new weapons exports to Saudi Arabia, but left open what would happen with already approved contracts.
Germanys economy ministry oversees the authorization of arms exports. Ministry spokesman Philipp Jornitz said Monday that the German government is working with those who have valid authorizations with the result that there are currently no (weapons) exports from Germany to Saudi Arabia.

Can Germany as a country ban these Saudi nationals from the Schengen Zone by itself? Is it something like out of state warrants here?
Are German sending a love letter to Iran?
Are German sending a love letter to Iran?
More for us.
Interesting point - hadn’t thought of it like that. Seems that is the case. Maybe Germany wants to smack down Saudi Arabia with their recent power plays in the region, especially their very successful Houthi smackdown. I was thinking it was to give Qatar/Al Jazeera a hand, but Iran is allied with the Shiite countries there.
The Schengen members would have to meet and agree on this. So far, the only country who has mounted charges is Saudi Arabia (I don’t think Turkey has yet to move onto charges). For five of the ‘hit’ squad members...the charges involve the death penalty, if convicted.
There’s been some criticism within Germany...that the arms sales should have been suspended back when they ‘dumped’ on Yemen.
Same question I had.
Bah - meant to add:
... so that makes a lot of sense. A love letter to Iran. Heh

Between three and four milllion people of Turkish descent live in Germany, and Merkel’s Stasi background means she’s allied with Putin (actually subservient to him, she just hasn’t had that conversation with him yet).
[snip] The former leader of the Green party, Cem Ozdemir, on Sunday compared the large number of Turkish citizens in Germany who voted for Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey’s election to far-right voters... Ozdemir, who led the Green party into last year’s national election, was responding to news that a majority of Turkish citizens living in Germany had voted to elect Erdogan as president of Turkey in Sunday’s election. Roughly 1.4 million people in Germany are eligible to vote in the Turkish elections, making them a crucial source of votes for politicians in Ankara. [/snip]

The Turkish minority is a factor, but Germany and Turkey have long standing ties, going back to the 19th Century. Both Imperial Germany and the Ottoman Empire considered each other counterweights to Russia.
WWII was the only exception, where Turkey wisely sat out the war as they were still exhausted from 11 years of war from 1912-1922 (Balkan Wars, WWI, Turkish War of Independence).
After the war, Turkey provided both manpower for German industry, and a market for German goods. The Germans have no love for Erdogan, but their ties to Turkey are real.
Dumping the Saudi arms deal is a low cost move from the German perspective.
Turks. Lots of them in Germany.
The German Empire built the Berlin-to-Baghdad railroad, had to go through Ottoman Turkey, and amusingly, got the British to build part of it. :^) It's unlikely that any of that was of much consideration, otherwise they wouldn't be citing the killing of a jihadist as the pretext. I doubt German arm sales to Saudi Arabia were about to take flight -- this is strictly a virtue signalling policy decision.
But they’re all good with Iranian nukes;
more EUro suicide.
Germany and Italy were Iran’s two main trading partners, the last time I checked, a few years ago.
Iraq quickly found itself bogged down in one of the longest and most destructive wars (The Iran/Iraq War) of attrition of the 20th century. During the war, Iraq used chemical weapons against Iranian forces fighting on the southern front and Kurdish separatists who were attempting to open up a northern front in Iraq with the help of Iran. These chemical weapons were developed by Iraq from materials and technology supplied primarily by West German companies wikipedia.org
