Sex offender Epstein settles suit, averting victim testimony

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A last-minute settlement was reached Tuesday in a long-running Florida lawsuit involving a politically connected financier accused of sexually abusing dozens of teenage girls, clearing the way for the victims’ lawyers to try to unravel a once-secret agreement that prevented federal criminal prosecution of the financier.

The non-prosecution agreement protecting Jeffrey Epstein was negotiated a decade ago by prosecutors in the South Florida U.S. attorney’s office, which was then run by current Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta. It is the subject of a separate federal lawsuit in Florida filed by victims who say the deal trampled their rights to be heard.

“That injustice needs to be addressed and will be addressed,” said attorney Jack Scarola, who represents fellow lawyer Bradley Edwards in the lawsuit settled Tuesday. “There is no justification for the broad scope of immunity that was granted.”

Epstein, 65, pleaded guilty in 2008 to two state charges after reaching the non-prosecution deal with Acosta’s office while under investigation for sexually abusing dozens of teenage girls. He served 13 months in jail, was required to reach financial settlements with many of the victims and registered as a convicted sex offender.

But Epstein could have faced a possible life sentence if federal prosecutors had pursued a draft 57-page indictment that was never filed. Now, Scarola and Edwards say that possibility still exists, and the victims — some of whom were only 13 or 14 when they were molested — may yet get their day in federal court amid a national #metoo movement that seeks to hold sexual harassers and abusers to account.

That is a tangled and uninformative piece of writing there. I’m confused.

As I read it, the Scarola/Edwards suit from years ago was settled, and now the victims who were previously silenced can bring suits against Epstein?

You can bet your 401(k) that the Clintons are dumping plenty of cash in all the right places to keep this from going to court where attorneys for the girls will surely ask who eles was on the island with them.

Agreed. For example, what does “clearing the way for the victims’ lawyers to try to unravel a once-secret agreement” mean?

Are we finally going to know how Epstein got away with just a slap on the wrist? Are we finally going to know who else was involved?

Tangentially connected to what happened to the then-very young female victims of Epstein’s international pedophilia ring that pimped girls to President Clinton, Prince Andrew. and many other well-heeled heels.
This action settlement closed a lawsuit between Epstein and an attorney representing several of the victims.

It was Federal Prosecutors that let Epstein off the hook.

It had nothing to do with Mueller screwing the pursuit of him. The Feds had all the evidence they needed to put him away for life.

But because of an article in GP, many here think it was Mueller who soured the prosecution. And that’s nonsense.

And I think Mueller is the lowest form of traitor to the nation.

That is the AP turning contortions to confuse, misdirect and of course protect the Clinton's from any mention....

AP, AFP and Reuters are just as corrupt as any of the ABCCBSNBC and cable media. Wild Willy will likely never see the inside of a court room, even if he is just as guilty as this freak. Too many liberal judges and prosecutors to ever get it done.

It basically says rich people get different Justice than poor people, don't you know that by now?

Here is a little more info from a few days ago.

(disturbing content/descriptions) http://www.breakingnewstime.com/alleged-victims-of-billionaire-sex-abuser-jeffrey-epstein-hope-new-civil-cases-will-bring-justice/

PapaBear is right, today’s deal was to get rid of state charges that would have brought some accusers to testify.

Pending is a Federal case where lawyers for the girls are challenging the old Federal plea deal from years ago because it violated the “Crime Victims Rights act”.

If the Federal one is successful, it may invalidate the original plea deal and send Epstein up the river where he belongs.

Evidently, there are around or over 100 victims identified.

Let’s hope, at least in this case, his money won’t protect him from justice.

Here’s an article from today, but it might be behind a paywall:

Key part from the Miami Herald article:
“By the time I was 16, I had probably brought him 70 to 80 girls who were all 14 and 15 years old. He was involved in my life for years,” said Wild, who was released from prison in October after serving three years on drug charges.

The girls — mostly 13 to 16 — were lured to his pink waterfront mansion by Wild and other girls, who went to malls, house parties and other places where girls congregated, and told recruits that they could earn $200 to $300 to give a man — Epstein — a massage, according to an unredacted copy of the Palm Beach police investigation obtained by the Herald.

My suspicion is that we are only seeing a small bit of what actually happened.

My suspicion is that Epstein was mainly a recruiter, that there were MANY more girls than we currently know about, and that some number of the girls, the ones that Epstein could verify as girls who could "disappear" without a lot of fuss, were passed along to others, and never seen again.
