Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico share the fundamental aspiration of statehood, although framed within different historical and constitutional contexts. Both jurisdictions are subject to the powers of Congress and have one non-voting member in the House of Representatives. There is also a broad recognition by the majority of the American citizens in each jurisdiction that the only way they can each achieve effective and politically meaningful representation in Congress is through statehood.

It’s not long-ignored. It comes up any time the Democrats need for power has gone unrequited.

All the Democrats can see is more black voters. I think the blacks in the continental US are getting wise to their promises they make and never keep.

Like Republicans want to give Democrats four free Senate seats and as many as five House seats.

Dream on.

I’d rather have the Phi11ipines become a state.

Only way the GOP would agree to it is if Democrats agree to create three new GOP-leaning states out of CA, IL and NY.

When pigs can fly.

The Phillipines would give us 100 million new Americans. I don’t think so. We should have never opened up to China to the extent we have. Philippines like us. They speak English and they believe in hard work/religion too. Corrupt? Yes. Still we could have made them an Asian tiger long ago.

Cut PR loose and make DC part of Maryland.

Then PR has it EVEN BETTER, since they are their own country, while DC gets its ‘statehood’ representation.

Make D.C. a part of Maryland for voting purposes only. Puerto Rico full independence or give it back to Spain. Nip this s-— in the bud.

The highly populated areas of DC go to MD but the monuments, White house , etc would still have 3 EV. Need to amend constitution to remove 23rd.

Which is why it will never happen.

In any case, while it will pass the House, it will die in the Senate.

Yes, give back the District of Columbia to Maryland.

The original boundaries of DC included land which was contributed by Virginia. That part was eventually given back to Virginia. So there is legal precendent for changing the borders of DC.

The same thing can happen here. Give DC back to Maryland, they get their congressional representation.

If DC was made part of VA or MD, it wouldn’t change the political balance of power. They’re already Blue States.

Democrats have no interest in it because it would maintain the status quo - which they’d like to change to their advantage.

Something else, DC and PR have in common... They could both slide beneath the ocean waves and the world would be a better place. (Providing all the humans in them escape unharmed) :/

Cut PR loose and make DC part of Maryland. <

It isn’t right for DC citizens to be disenfranchised (seriously). Carve out a small - and I mean small - federal district out of DC. Office buildings and parks. Nothing more. The rest goes to Maryland.

As for PR, run it through the normal statehood process. If it fails anywhere along the way, cut ‘em loose.
