Pelosi claims win over Trump in State of the Union showdown (CNN fake news barf alert)
CNN (Chicken Noodle News) ^ | January 24, 2019 | Stephen Collinson

Posted on 01/24/2019 4:24:18 AM PST by Zakeet

The House speaker, fortified by brutal polling for Donald Trump, refuses to provide the President an easy way out of his own political box as the government shutdown sparked by his demand for a border wall drags into a 34th day.

In his latest skirmish with Pelosi, Trump effectively admitted defeat late Wednesday and conceded that he would not be able to give his State of the Union address until after the shutdown ends. Earlier in the day, he had publicly thrown down a gauntlet and tried to force the speaker to back down over her refusal to let next Tuesday's showpiece speech take place in the House chamber.

Pelosi's victory came ahead of a pair of Senate votes due to take place on Thursday on dueling Republican and Democratic plans designed to end the shutdown. Neither is likely to break the deadlock, and may simply underline that Trump's hopes of a win remain slim.

The President is trying hard to reshape a political battlefield that is stacked against him, as sources suggest he is increasingly mystified that his tactics have not turned the tables on Democrats. Throughout his life, in business and in politics, Trump has leveraged his domineering personality, flair for showmanship and an unshakable self-belief that often defies the facts of a situation to get his way.

But he is finding in the new political context of divided Washington against an experienced adversary that his force of will and talent for engineering televised spectacles are not moving the political needle.

“She’s also flying commercial to and from SF now ..... “

I wonder if she’s paying or expensing it.

Well, with the available information we have, she did win this round. I asked last night, what happened to McConnell, he’s the other half of the legislative branch. Did he quietly side with Pelosi? Did he cede authority to her?

You're right, in spite of the other comments, Pelosi did win this round. And no, McConnell did not cede his authority. To invite the President to Congress requires a joint resolution, and if Pelosi isn't going to vote on the joint resolution, it ain't gonna happen.

There is no way Pelosi wants to be seen sitting behind the President with her 'sucking on Tide Pods' face while Trump beats her up over a measly $5 bilion.

How long has this “story” and others like it been in the “can”?

I’m sure all of the way back when Botox Nan sent DJT the fake invite.

Let the Media do their “Democrats are Winning!” spew.

I trust Trump at this point to know how this game is played.

If Trump doesn’t go to the House and give the speech Pelosi wins. It’s that simple. Trump mewling about her not wanting to hear the truth is weak. It’s obvious that Trump still hasn’t learned that he’s going to have to stand up to these evil sons of bitches. They’ll escalate until he goes toe to toe with them.

He’s missed a great opportunity to deliver his message to many who have not heard it

What makes you think the networks would have carried it? They most likely would have treated it as a political rally and passed.

The President has the right to convene Congress. Speaking before Congress needs and invitation.

Whatever. I see us no closer to a wall than we were 30 years ago. All of this, on all sides, is just Kabuki theater.

this article is largely opinion. Only real news is that Trump is siding with tradition and waiting for a time he thinks better to give his sotu address in the HOR, but that’s not the focus of this article.

“Trump effectively admitted defeat”

Nope.
Has them right where he wants them.

Now they’re going to start negotiating, thinking they’ve beat him.
Trump wins negotiations.
And then, winning the border/budget battle, he has now arranged a victory speech before Congress.

I wonder if she’s paying or expensing it.

I'm sure she's expensing it ... but it's worth it.

She's flying with the great unwashed and if she's flying into and out of Reagan National, she's also got a stop over which would require a change in planes.

THIS I'm lovin' :)

“RIF’s will begin on the 800 thousand furlowed workers. At this point keeping them on is nothing more than wasted money on wasted money to begin with.”

The cost savings per, plus office space was calculated several weeks ago at $130 billion. A pyrric victory was aptly mentioned on this thread.

Trump has been trying to work with her. She doesn’t want to do her part and hasn’t even bothered to show up for meetings with him, even when other Dem reps attend. She doesn’t care whether government reopens, whether people get paid, whether programs get passed, or even whether the Dems get anything out of this as a party.

Nancy thinks it’s all about her and that the other Dem Reps are nothing but peons or even court jesters in Queen Nancy’s court. I would bet that a lot of them are getting tired of this and resent it. Remember, she refused even to put the SOTU question to a vote of the House, so they apparently don’t even have a right to speak in the Queen’s presence. I can’t imagine that they’re liking that.

I think Trump wants to thank Pelosi in his victory speech — and not sarcastically, either. Seriously.

True enough about CNN, but Trump's reaction surprised me.

I figured that he'd go ahead and give the SOTU, just somewhere else. With all the foolishness surrounding the speech, it's guaranteed to be watched by millions who otherwise couldn't care less.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I think your sarcasm meter is stuck - cause I sure as shooting wouldn’t say Trump was supporting her.

Yeah if only Cruz had won.

Well...

POTUS Twitter tweet stated that he would give the SOTU address after the shutdown is over, as per the Pelosi correspondance request.

There is alot of info in that tweet...
