It has been three years since Sarah Root was struck and killed in Omaha by Edwin Mejia, who entered the country illegally and was driving drunk.
On Thursday, the anniversary of of her death, Iowa Senator Joni Ernst, along with Senators Chuck Grassley, Ben Sasse, Deb Fischer and eleven of their colleagues, re-introduced legislation in honor of Sarah. The legislation, aptly named Sarah's Law, would allow federal law enforcement to detain illegal immigrants criminally charged with killing or seriously injuring another person.
Following his arrest for Motor Vehicle Homicide, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement declined to issue a detainer on Mejia. Subsequently, he posted bond, fled the country and still remains at-large.
The legislation would require ICE to make efforts to identify and provide relevant information to the crime victims or their families. Under this law, Mejia would have been detained by law enforcement and not allowed to flee from justice and the Root family would have been kept up-to-date on Mejias status.

I still remember going to the hospital. First time I met Sarah’s mom, dad and brother was at her funeral.
This picture you posted also made me tear up.
She’s doing an admirable thing. Very good.
Justice needs to be forced to disclose illegals crime stats.
All show. That is all the politicians are these days.
It is way past time to clean all incumbents out of office. They are all worthless slugs.
We should not wait until they harm or kill Americans.
BUILD THE WALL!
DEPORT THEM ALL!
I was thinking the anniversary of her death was near, how very sad for her family and your daughter and your family.
We had an illegal here in NV that killed 4 elderly people, must have followed them home.
They caught him pawning their items.
We need the wall and we want these people out of our country.
Take care, the best to your daughter.
