More than a thousand inmates have been stuck in freezing cells at a federal jail on the Brooklyn waterfront that has had limited power and heat for at least this week, according to federal public defenders and leaders of the union representing the jail’s corrections officers.
“They just stay huddled up in the bed,” said June Bencebi, a case manager at the jail and the treasurer of the local chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents about 500 corrections officers at the jail.
The jail, the Metropolitan Detention Center, houses more than 1,600 inmates and lies in an industrial swath near the waterfront in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Some inmates are linked to high-profile drug trafficking and terrorism cases, while others are comparatively anonymous New Yorkers awaiting trial.

It’s not just a little cold for them, they are locked in a deep freezer. This could be life threatening.
The inmates should be up and raping each other in no time.
Wow. Sounds like prison camp conditions, without the beatings. How cold does it have to be to get hypothermia? I HATE being cold. Rather be hot, anyday, than cold.
I’m sure it has something to do with Trump. Possibly his buildings soaked up all the available heat in the boroughs. That’s got to be it! They can send AOC there to spread the hot air around. Well, heck - any old demon-rat would do!
It was 44 degrees. Colder in higher floors. Holding center for people awaiting trials. Not right. They were banging begging people on outside for help.

Not good. It’s supposed to be a jail where inmates wait for their cases to be heard, or post bail, and are kept reasonably comfortable by US jail standards. It’s not supposed to be a soviet prison in siberia sans beatings and executions.
They are banging SOS to people outside the building for help.
True. “Jail” usually means arrested. “Prison” usually means convicted.
I was going to say “my crocodile tears are drying up”, but maybe this isn’t quite right.

I agree if someone commits a non-capitol offense we should be able to let them freeze to death or die of that stroke or starvation. Great stuff.
Furthermore if someone makes immoral comments on a website we should be able to do the same to them.,

That’s one dividing line. Another is people serving sentences longer than one year got to state prison, anything less is county jail.
I don’t know NYC’s rules.
They still might not live through it. Once the calories are burnt up so are they. Detention centers do not supply enough calories as it is. Just barely enough to keep them alive. They don’t have any extra to help with combat these very cold conditions. Huddled up or not, they are in a life threatening situation there.
But that’s fine... No matter what they did guess they still deserve to die...
