Senate confirms Ohio’s Chad Readler as federal appeals judge over objections from Democrats

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday confirmed Columbus attorney Chad Readler to be a judge on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals over objections from Democrats including U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, who portrayed Readler as a right-wing idealogue who has “actively worked to strip Ohioans of their rights.”

The Senate voted 52 to 47 to approve Readler’s nomination to fill a vacancy created when Judge Deborah Cook took senior status. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine was the only Republican who opposed Readler.

Readler has held several high profile roles in the U.S. Justice Department’s civil division, where he led a team of more than 1,400 career Justice Department employees, including over 1,000 lawyers. He has also been a partner with Jones Day in Columbus, and clerked on the Sixth Circuit with Judge Alan Norris.

. . . . .

Brown and Senators including Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York objected to Readler’s past role as a Justice Department attorney who filed legal briefs that argued for striking down the Affordable Care Act and its protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions.

“Chad Readler is a clear and immediate threat to the health coverage of millions and millions of Americans who have preexisting conditions,” Brown said at a Tuesday press conference to decry Readler’s confirmation.

Brown also said he also objected to Readler’s past job as chair of the Ohio Alliance for Public Charter Schools, and his efforts to undermine the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He said Readler also defended the Trump Administration’s policy of separating immigrant parents from their children at the border and argued that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals is unlawful.

Chad Readler defended the Trump Administration’s discriminatory transgender military ban.

When we see a man shoot another man in cold blood, the media always refers to the shooter as an alleged attacker. However, when the Republicans do something, they're just judged guilty without a trial.

Discrimination takes place all the time. Every new job applicant is evaluated on a set of criteria the hiring agent harbors in his/her list of needs.

That is not an evil form of discrimination.

I don't consider an LGBT clause to be an evil form of discrimination either. In the military folks work, play, shower, eat, and sleep in very close quarters. As much as possible, the recruiter needs to try and weed out people who will not meld together well in such circumstances.

Look, I myself might not fit in well in certain work environments. Is it evil to select someone other than me that will fit in better? No.

The inclusion of the word "discriminatory" here was intended to interject bias into this news report.

Until writers are capable of avoiding biases of their own, they should refrain from trying to trash others for bias.

I don't need a judge and jury person trying to inform me of facts.

Damned Susan Collins AGAIN!

I think she votes with the Dems more than she does the Pubs.

Wouldn’t it be great if we had some Democrats like her? No. Their team votes as a solid block while ours is “principled.” Only Republicans reach across the aisle to show how reasonable they are.

This is how it works. The left proposes something extreme and our side reaches across the aisle in an effort to compromise. The left gives in on a few of the most extreme points but gets the rest.

You see this sort of thing all the time in business. Every department asks for more than it needs, knowing they’ll get less but still have plenty to keep operating. The departments who are typically screwed are ones who honestly request only what they truly need.

Compromise for Democrats means giving them 90% of what they demand.

Yes, and some Republicans still haven’t figured it out. I’m being generous of course. I hope it’s ignorance but it could very well be our team is filled with Democrats in all but party affiliation.

Democrat nominees get Republican votes. Only Republican nominees are apparently so reprehensible they can’t get even a single Democrat vote.

Sure would. Sadly, DINOs only exist in our dreams.

Collins is up for reelection in 2020. She is no Republican and her career should be ended.

“Damned Susan Collins AGAIN!...I think she votes with the Dems more than she does the Pubs.”

You may want to look that up. She votes for at least 95% of Republican-nominated judges, and did vote for Kavenaugh (after some drama), and Gorsuch. Find me any DEMOCRAT that comes close to matching her record on voting for Republican-nominated judges.

But think about things now. She knew her vote didn’t count since we have 53 Republican Senators, and she’s in a desperate battle to hold her seat n 2020 against what will be a FLAMING LEFTIST - so if she wants to throw away some meaningless votes, I have no issue with her.

“Susan Collins is NOT a REPUBLICAN!”

Then WHAT IS SHE? With a 95% plus record of voting for Republican-nominated judges and having voted for Gorsuch and Kavenaugh, she sure as hell is NOT a Democrat...but you will have a Democrat in that seat if she loses in 2020.

“Collins is up for reelection in 2020. She is no Republican and her career should be ended.”

If you could find me ONE DEMOCRAT who can even come close to her voting record, particularly on conservative judges, I might agree with you.

But that doesn’t exist. In this vote, and the vote for another Circuit Judge a few days ago, both Manchin and Jones voted NO. Some for Kavenaugh* and Gorsuch.

*Technically Manchin voted yes on Kavenaugh, but waited for Collins, to make sure his yes-vote wasn’t needed...otherwise he was a NO.

Outstanding! Another Circuit Court appointee confirmed. If my count is correct, that makes 32 for Trump. Still a long way to go to counter Obama’s 55 though.

Thank the Lord that there is enough of a majority margin (though narrow) that Collins and Murkowski can’t block something on their own by joining the Dims.

I agree with your thoughts on discrimination.

Shoot, I discriminate against Murderers, Liars, Thieves, etc., based on what the Good Book tells me as well.

I also discriminate against those that practice what God calls an Abomination.

At the same time, I practice the old adage: “Hate the sin, Love the sinner.”

Exactly right.

I will admit I can’t always love the sinner, but I know my God suffers a loss when the soul of a sinner goes full on bad. So what I feel isn’t love, but a sense of appreciation for the dynamics of that situation.

Perhaps the best we can hope for is to reflect upon ourselves and commit to living a life that hurts God less ourselves.

I'm not just talking about judges. I'm talking about her overall pattern of contrarianism. I don't think I know of another Republican who breaks ranks with the party on a more consistent basis.
