Stockpile transformers,
Design large fault isolators to minimize cascaded failure.
I heard that A LOT of the stuff we’d need to replace in case of EMP, or even really casual attacks by savvy equipment kooks with guns, is made in CHINA:
In trade we’re using leverage against them now, if our balls were in a vice, does anyone really believe they’d spot us all the equipment, rushing it to us, toute de suite..?
NO WAY ON EARTH.
THREE mags of ammo by 1 or 2 guys:
That’s all it took in 2013 for one or maybe two guys to very nearly take down most of California:

They caused $17 million in damage but that was CHUMP CHANGE compared to what it could have been.
Shot the transformers, cooling oil leaked out, place melted down; it was THAT easy.
Instead of a couple of Earth-Firsters or disgruntled employees, what instead might happen if we faced a foe with resources on the level of a COUNTRY like NK or Iran...?
Liberals everywhere are outraged by this unprovoked act of aggression. How dare we defend ourselves. /s
I'm more concerned with getting basic power to the grid.
I can rig my 98 GMC to run without most vulnerable circuits.
“About time.”
I agree.
A ‘EMP can be caused by mankind OR mother nature:
Solar storm of 1959 (melted telegraph lines — imagine what it would melt/destroy today):

Now that DJT is convinced the threat is real well finally get some action on this. No other politician could or would protect us from this very real and incredibly dangerous threat.
Agree, althought it should have been done long ago.
The problem is, much of the T&D infrastructure is 50 or more years old, which is it’s original design life and aging further reduces it’s ability to withstand overstress. Large distribution transformers start at a half million dollars and are not inventoried in sufficient quantity to supply wide scal replacement. And they’re no longer made in the US. That means potentially long outage periods even for a relatively minor EMP event, natural or manmade.
The other big problem is the control systems that safeguard against cascade failure are vulnerable. In normal times the grid is highly fault tolerant and capable of protecting itself, but if an EMP damages those protective mechanisms then it puts generating resources at risk. Damage or destroy something like the Hoover Dam generating capacity and southern CA is going to look like North Korea at night.
I’d think an old school carburetor and points distributor would do the job. Wouldn’t run as nicely as with the EFI but it would work. You’d need to put a fuel pressure regulator on though, the carb wants a couple psi not 60.
I think this is a very wise precaution.
How about shielding existing equipment and any new installations? At least in critical junctures.
-THIS-
Bravo my friend.
That too!
Fortunately our ‘earth first’ idiots don’t know enough to be this logical in anything mechanical.
They do know how to make a killer Latte though...
Well, they certainly should be able to find a judge somewhere to rule this unconstitutional.
