California Law Would Outlaw Small Shampoo, Conditioner Bottles in Hotels
Reason ^ | April 23, 2019 | Billy Binion

The jury has rendered its verdict: plastic is polluting our oceans, and it's a problem. But it's one that won't be solved by straw bans or prohibitions on single-use plastics.

Yet California is poised to do just that with Assembly Bill 1162, which would require that hotels and miscellaneous vacation rentals phase out small plastic bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion by January 1, 2023. Instead, they'll need to opt for refillable dispensers or containers that hold 12 or more ounces of product.

"We know we have an enormous problem with our world, we've become addicted to [plastic] and it's caused a major dilemma environmentally," Democratic Assemblymember Ash Kalra (District 27), who introduced the legislation, told ABC News.

He isn't wrong. A great deal of the plastic panic centers around the Great Pacific Garbage Patch—the infamous and mammoth collection of trash floating between Hawaii and California. Its discovery in 1997 and the years-long news coverage that followed prompted a worldwide frenzy to declutter the oceans. Measuring more than 1.6 million square kilometers (and growing), it is about three times the size of France, and more than twice the size of Texas.

But it isn't dominated by plastic straws, bags, or erstwhile shampoo bottles. The vast majority of the debris is composed of fishing-related accessories, like nets, ropes, and baskets. An estimated 20 percent came from the 2011 Japanese tsunami.

So people pay hundreds of dollars to travel to cities like San Francisco, where they are required to pay hundreds of dollars for hotel rooms, where they are in turn required to use the same kind of refillable soap dispensers used in the seediest restrooms in the sleaziest bars throughout the world.

California:

No BBQ’s on balconies
No BBQ’s in backyards of many cities
Can’t sell 90% of cool guns
Can’t buy a normal Catalytic converter
Can’t buy or sell bottled water in a public building
Can’t advertise many things on a billboard on a public building
Throwing a football in LA County beaches: $1,500 fine
Digging a hole deeper than 18 inches on LA county beaches: $1,500 fine

What did I miss? I always forget a bunch of good ones

they’ll just switch to foil pouches. All environmental issues are really just a way to create more useless jobs transitioning one product/item to another meanwhile lots of waste is created in the process.

The ocean currents and jet streams flow from the Pacific to California and California bans little plastic shampoo bottles in hotels.

Uh-huh ...

Many of the nicer Marriotts on the west coast have started doing this as a cost cutting measure. I usually take the small bottles to donate to the homeless shelter near me, but oh well.

China is no longer accepting recycling materials as of last year, so it’s not even getting hauled out and dumped in the ocean any more.

When shampoo is outlawed, only outlaws will shampoo. Toilet paper will be outlawed next, which won’t impact our foreign invaders.

More plastic syringes in the streets than shampoo bottles but that’s California always keep head where the sun doesn’t shine.

Cannot carry more than 3 oz of liquid such as shampoo on airline flights.

Even if I use my own at the motel, I am also limited with my possession of less than 3 oz.
