Former Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar, a Republican foreign policy sage known for leading efforts to help the former Soviet states dismantle and secure much of their nuclear arsenal, but whose reputation for working with Democrats cost him his final campaign, died Sunday. He was 87.
The Lugar Center issued a statement saying Lugar died early Sunday at the Inova Fairfax Heart and Vascular Institute in Virginia from complications related to chronic inflammatory demylinating polyneuropathy, or CIPD, a rare neurological disorder.

The hell you say. Simple disagreements are one thing...I like Fords you like Chevys, cool see you at the bar later my friend. But I like guns and you don’t (for example) therefore you will forcibly take my guns away. No dice. I’ve long since had it with these kind of filthy self-important politicians and have zero compassion for my torturers.
That was my recollection as well.
He was not a fan of the tea party.
“RIP RINO.”
Yep. Being born and raised in Indiana I was quite familiar with Lugar.
He was actually quite good for his first term and a portion of his second. As he became more entrenched and powerful in the Senate he got more centrist then moved left of center. By the end he was one of the more liberal Republicans.
Often wonder why so many Republicans move left but Democrats NEVER move to the right. That happens regularly in the House, Senate, and on the Court.
Like the Cindi Lauper song said, “Money changes everything.”
I lived in Washington DC for nearly a decade. Its a pleasant city, the elites live well, there are many intelligent people there, and they all have a great deal of regard for themselves and their perceived natural-born right to govern others. So its difficult to not get swept up in the Uniparty bubble and prevalent statist, leftist, and condescending attitudes of the place.
And I believe the syndrome is worst among the most powerful politicians and the high bureaucrats. For all his virtues, Lugar became infected badly
Byron, (Whizzer) White was an exception.
He was appointed to the Supreme Court by JFK.
He actually got more conservative in his latter years. One good thing about him is he often based his opinions on the facts of the case rather than liberal or conservative.
Another GOPE RINO get along to go along stooge enabling Obama’s minions. Broke forming filibuster against hard left Elena Kagan to USSC. That action and other GOPE buffoonery resulted in his defeat in 2012 primary, GOPE RINO to the core, Lugar would not support nominee and actively worked to elect Joe Donnelly as Senator.
Glad you were all in the right limo. Could have been awkward otherwise.
I forgot about him endorsing Donnelly, thanks.
Whatever good he did early on, he morphed into a Swamp Creature. He should’ve retired in 1989 after 2 terms, not be forced out after 6, and, as a parting shot, give de facto endorsement to the Demonrat candidate. RIP.
The Beltway is liberal, so when Republicans live inside the Beltway too long, they become more liberal. Perfect example of this is Chief Justice John Roberts.

Very good observation!
It seems it's ALWAYS Republican, supposedly conservative
Senators and Representatives crossing the aisle.
It's always Dems demanding Republicans "work" with them.
This state of affairs must change.
Actually to be fair, Joe Manchin regularly works with Republicans. We ought to acknowledge that...
He strayed off the GOP reservation more and more as he aged, but most of the time I think it was an accommodation to a larger goal and foreign policy issues. His study of economics always made me wonder why he wasn’t on the Senate Finance Committee.
Prayers to his family. I thought he was good. May he rest in peace...
Joe Lieberman was ran out on a rail in the 2004 Dem primary simply for supporting Israel and the War on Terror.

From Indiana’s perspective, it probably wouldn’t have been a hot idea for Lugar to pack it in 1988 given that Dan Quayle was running as Bush’s VP that year. It would have obliterated all of the state’s seniority in the Senate if Lugar left at the same time as Quayle. I could see 1994 and 2000 as better years to go; heck, Quayle might have made a comeback for Lugar’s open seat in 1994, assuming he hadn’t moved to Arizona by then.
I like that story. Thanks
