A deeply committed communist who wrote most of MLK's speeches, Stanley David Levison (on left, in photo) was the one the FBI originally was intersted in. They considered him genuinely dangerous. The FBI tapes of MLK were made simply as a by-product of FBI interest in Levison.

In private, MLK always self-identifieds as a Marxist, though for political reasons he was a registered Republican. Over half of his PhD thesis was plagiarized.

MLK attended a Communist teacher's academy in Tennessee and there are photos of that.

MLK Jr.'s pastor father took a trip to Europe where he was deeply smitten by the life story of the German religious rebel/reformer Martin Luther. The man returned and legally changed his OWN name to Martin Luther King, instructing his congregation to call his son, "Martin Luther King, Jr.", which they did.
