Seven House Republicans joined their Democratic colleagues Tuesday in voting for legislation that would grant permanent protections and a pathway to citizenship for more than 2 million undocumented immigrants.
The American Dream and Promise Act grants amnesty to more than 1 million immigrants brought to the country illegally when they were under the age of 18, including roughly 700,000 migrants shielded from deportation by then-president Barack Obamas Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) executive action.
The bill also applies to the hundreds of thousands of migrants admitted to the country under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which is intended for those fleeing violence or natural disasters, and the roughly 4,000 Liberians covered by George W. Bushs 2007 Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) executive order.
Taken together, the various designations cover roughly 2.1 million migrants, the Center for American Progress said in a Monday statement.
The legislation would grant conditional permanent residency to the eligible immigrants for ten years and provide them a path to citizenship if they meet certain educational and employment requirements. It passed the House 236187 with unanimous support from Democrats, who were joined by Republicans Don Bacon of Nebraska, Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida, Will Hurd of Texas, Fred Upton of Michigan, Chris Smith of New Jersey, Dan Newhouse of Washington, and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.
Republican critics of the legislation passed Tuesday have argued that it further incentivizes illegal immigration and fails to address the threat posed by the record influx of migrants arriving at the southern border.
This bill does nothing to address our crisis, said Representative Mike D. Rogers (R., Ala.). Instead, it tells an entire generation of illegal immigrants that breaking our laws is rewarded.
Democrats, Rogers said, would rather reward illegal immigrants than secure our borders, enforce our laws, and fix this crisis.
The legislation does, however, prevent the provision of state funding for undocumented immigrants higher education if the same programs are not made available to all U.S. citizens.
“Build the wall first.”
The leftists are already here.
We need a Constitutional “wall” around our money and property.
Perhaps:
1. No new taxes/imposts/unreimbursed mandates
2. New types of fees and fines only by voter approval and only until four years after the next Presidential inauguration.
3. Taxes/fees/fines to be increased only to adjust for monetary inflation.
4. No new or increased subsidies for anything by any domestic governmental means.
They’d “grant permanent protections” for lawbreakers.
How about some “permanent protections” for American citizen taxpayers and American citizen property owners?
So she has the right to give away a country founded 130 years before her family arrived, and populated 300 years prior?
Yeah. We need to rely on families that have been here at least 5 years longer, like the Trumps.
Don’t be too shocked when Hurd switches parties. He’s the ultimate RINO.
He ain’t tryin’ to give away the country, ya know?
Kind of a big difference.
I blew a gasket a long time ago. I’m in the don’t give a damn about these ‘immigrants’ and want them all to die with their sympathizers.
Fred Upchuck....the same ahole who banned light bulbs.
On behalf of myself a voter of Michigan I wish to disassociate myself from Rep. Fred Upton, a wasted vote and egregious example of the sick swamp infested Republican party in the the state of Michigan.
In am not in his district. I did not vote for the man. I take no responsibility for putting him into office.
Not “first,” not EVER!!!
TRAITOR one and all!
Somebody should do a calculation to see what percentage of the worlds population that we can fit in the US
If he is your Rep., he needs to be Primaried!
Why would I even care?
When a R votes D, that tells us all we need to know!
I live in Maine’s Second Congressional District.
Because of Rank Choice Voting, my GOP congressman, Bruce Poliquin, lost last November even though he received 2,500 votes MORE than his democrat challenger, state rep. Jared Golden.
There were two minor candidates in the race, both liberals and one of them a democrat.
The votes for the two challengers were given to the voters second choice, and Jared Golden the democrat was awarded the seat.
There was a big uproar.
Hey, here’s a better idea: just grant instant citizenship to all illiterate and unemployable Africans and South/Central Americans.
They can come over here and collect welfare, thus solving all their problems.
And the legal challenge failed?
HOWINHELL DID THE MINOR CANDIDATES THROW THE ELECTION?
Rank Choice Voting CANNOT BE CONSTITUTIONAL! EVEN IN MAINE!
Traitors all.
I’m sure Hurd the Turd is from Austin.
Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida,
Will Hurd of Texas,
Fred Upton of Michigan,
Chris Smith of New Jersey,
Dan Newhouse of Washington, and
Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania."
Build the wall first.
AND THEN THROW THEM OVER IT!!!!
