In the hours before the attack on the two tankers in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday, the Iranians spotted a US drone flying overhead and launched a surface-to-air missile at the unmanned aircraft, a US official told CNN.
The missile missed the drone and fell into the water, the official said.
Prior to taking fire, the American MQ-9 drone observed Iranian vessels closing in on the tankers, the official added, though the source did not say whether the unmanned aircraft saw the boats conducting an actual attack.

Trying to start one? They’ve been involved in several for a long time through their proxy militias like the Houthis, Hezbullah and Hamas.
They either think the US has no stomach for war on Iran and they are hoping to go to the brink and end with negotiations; or, trying to jack the price of oil so their black market sales will generate more money. Or both.
I have no idea what Obama was thinking when he cut that deal with Iran - if any deal with Iran was to be made it had to include ending sponsorship of these militias.
Or perhaps now that Obama has paid them off they are looking for an excuse to leave - getting them ousted by war or rebellion is a good cover story for their impending moves to Paris, Zurich and Vienna.

I’ll agree that several ME parties seem to be agitating for direct conflict with Iran. But as you said, Iran has been taunting too.
And it’s not just taunting - Iran has been sponsoring multiple proxy militias on multiple fronts including the Houthis, Hezbullah and Hamas. Iran has been building up in Syria. And let’s not forget, Iran is the country that trained the Iraqi militias to build and deploy the IEDs that killed and maimed thousands of American troops.
Only 3 things can come of all this: 1) status quo, 2) escalation, 3) detente. Status quo is untenable now with the sanctions. Detente is possible only if Iran backs down. That leaves #2 for now.
WHY is the press not framing this as an act of aggression, if not war?
O’Zero is simply the messenger... sort of like the False Prophet of Revelations would be in my opinion.
