The popular knitting website Ravelry is banning users from expressing support for the US President Donald Trump and his administration on its platform.
On Sunday night, a tweet, which has now been shared almost 10,000 times and attracted 13,000 comments, said: "We cannot provide a space that is inclusive of all and also allow support for open white supremacy. Support of the Trump administration is undeniably support for white supremacy."
n a statement on its website, Ravelry said supporters of the president could still use the site but could not express their support in its forum or knitting patterns.
"We are not endorsing Democrats nor banning Republicans," it said.
"We are definitely not banning conservative politics.
"Hate groups and intolerance are different from political position."
Ravelry said its policy was largely based on one adopted in October 2018 by the role-playing game website RPG.Net
At the time, RPG said the Trump administration was so incompatible with its values "that formal political neutrality is not tenable".
Since Ravelry's ban, it has been the subject of more than 30,000 tweets.
Joyce Alene tweeted she was "proud" to be a Ravelry member and it was the "same folks who knit hats for the women's march taking the lead on calling out hate", alluding to the Pussyhat project, where thousands of women donned pink woolly hats to protest against the president.
But fellow Ravelry user Shelly Caldwell tweeted: "I will be cancelling my account #Maga [make America great again]."
Though not a Ravelry user, Keith Barrett tweeted: "You cannot claim to be inclusive while banning or censoring half the country for supporting its president."
But lawyer Tiffany Li said as a private company, Ravelry was under no obligation to allow all viewpoints on its platform.

For more commentary on this:
I love Ravelry, but giving it up won’t be a hardship.
Didn’t visit their site often, but have deleted my account with them...thanks for the heads up!
Time to knit elsewhere!
Ravelry might do a number on local yarn shops, too. If you buy a pattern from Ravelry through a LYS, the shop gets a cut, IIRC.
WTG, Ravelry. Most of the shops I’m familiar with can’t afford to lose ANY revenue.
Knit pussy hats being groped by a cut out of Joe Biden.
Or Bill Clinton with an additional cut out of Hillary tearing into an accuser.
“We cannot provide a space that is inclusive of all and also allow support for open white supremacy. Support of the Trump administration is undeniably support for white supremacy.”
Nothing says “inclusive” like banning half of the population.
Could be a scheme. Great way to get some free publicity and then go back on the ban.
Slandering people is essentially all the left has nowadays. But what can you expect from closed-minded, hate-filled, intolerant people with God complexes and a need to control others?
White supremacy? The leftists really are making themselves look absurd. It’s all so ridiculous when the leftists pretend that mainstream ideas held by many tens of millions (at least) of good people in this country are somehow White supremacist. Even the majority of Democrats held Trump-like views just a couple of decades ago. They really are demanding we move into 1984 territory.
Stalinists have always liked purges for those who don’t follow the party line blindly.
It is said that Dems are now hard sore socialists, anti Christian, and; they Do not believe in the Land of the free and home of the brave. They want the land where everything is free and the home of gays.
Those like this site are much more guilty of what they accuse Trump of being than he is.
Contact Ravelry advertisers and ask them to denounce the new policy.
Why are people so stupid? PROVE IT you crazy witch!!!
Libel and slander laws are different for public personalities but for gosh sake you should not be able to say things that you can't prove to be true.
