Apple Moves Mac Pro Production to China (Oh my)
Wall Street Journal (no paywall) ^ | June 28, 2019 9:32 am ET | By Tripp Mickle and Yoko Kubota

Apple Inc. AAPL -0.91% is manufacturing its new Mac Pro computer in China, according to people familiar with its plans, shifting abroad production of what had been its only major device assembled in the U.S. as trade tensions escalate between the Trump administration and Beijing.

The tech giant has tapped Taiwanese contractor Quanta Computer Inc. to manufacture the $6,000 desktop computer and is ramping up production at a factory near Shanghai, the people said. Apple can save on shipping costs for components given the proximity of many of its suppliers to Shanghai, rather than having to supply a factory in the U.S.

While the Mac Pro isn’t one of Apple’s higher-volume products, the decision on where to make it carries outsize significance. Apple’s reliance on factories in China to manufacture its products has been an issue for the company, especially under President Trump, who has pressured Apple and other companies to make more in the U.S.

Are you opening a mega-factory in the US producing parts in volume required for assembly - like custom made and designed screws? Because that’s why the US made parts are being shipped to China for final assembly - there are no such factories in the US.

Nonsense, it will turn the new computer into a great keystroke logger for Beijing. China will have all the fanbois secrets.

And to add, how many of these things are they going to make?

No Mega factory needed.

There are no secrets. Just Apple hating on your part while you type on a device made in China/Taiwan/South Korea.

From reading the article, it sounds like it’s an expensive desktop computer that has very little market share. Article also talks about how when it was being made in the US, employees were “contract employees” who worked for minimum wage and would leave their shifts even if production was still in progress.

I don’t see this move as a big deal, other than perhaps leaving a negative impression about the company in the US.

Screws? Yours need tightening. Any number of EMS companies in the US could build this computer. A years supply of the China-made subassemblies would fit in a single cargo plane. They’re movng it because they want to.

Just another Apple hater apparently.

I used Apple computers exclusively in the early 90s before moving to PCs. It wasn't so much the computers I hated as the elitist, arrogant and superior-acting Apple users. Apple can go pound rice. ;-)

Unfortunately that is not true - the last company hired by Apple to make the screws for the trash can model could not supply the required 20,000 screws per day Apple needed. And have you looked at the manufacturing specs for the Mac Pro? And if you believe there is such a company in the US that could produce the boxes at volume, please contact Apple and save them the headache of changing production venues.

No company moves production “just because they want to”.

So because some people acted badly, you hate the company that made the box? What kind of sense does that make?

Yep. China is kicking our asses here in this regard.

We can't over the course of 20+ years ship our manufacturing base over to China and expect President Trump to bring it all back in two.

100% true.

As for "Thimmy the Homo", no doubt he partners in Commie China for the cost savings and their shared hatred of America.

In addition, knowing Commie China steals their IP and can force Apple to embed spyware, Apple sold its soul to the devil.

A huge "NO THANKS" to anything Apple and its indoctrinated fanbois.
