(Reuters) - The Pentagon is rapidly assessing the United States' rare earths capability in a race to secure stable supply of the specialized material amid the country's trade conflict with China, which controls the rare earths industry, according to a government document seen by Reuters.
The push comes weeks after China threatened to curb exports to the United States of rare earths, a group of 17 minerals used to build fighter jets, tanks and a range of consumer electronics.
The Pentagon wants miners to describe plans to develop U.S. rare earths mines and processing facilities, and asked manufacturers to detail their needs for the minerals, according to the document, which is dated June 27.

We have already waited (far) too long.
Low profit owing to completely in$ane enviro regs up the ying-yang.

Trump should reactivate it in the name of national Security.
Ramp up production and waive the insane EPA regulations in the name of national security. It was completely insane that we allowed the Gaia Worshipers to kill off our production of rare earth minerals.
The military needs to let some prospectors into the China Lake Weapons facility and surrounding areas.
a private company would have to be nuts to invest substantially and then the trade war ends and China kills them in pricing.
It’s national security so sign a multi year deal if you have to.
This is one case where it would be worth it.
I guess when it comes to money, even China doesn’t mind that it sells us stuff that is necessary for certain war planes and tanks.
Kind of asleep at the wheel - importing our rare earths (and God knows what else) from our Number One Enemy.
And knowing just how complacent this country is, I wouldn’t be surprised if jamming GPS and cutting Internet cables (both easy to do, at least for advanced countries) not only knocked out our military overseas, but knocked it out on our own soil as well.
It takes years, maybe even decades to train a great sub sonarman and the best training isn’t simulated —it’s in the OCEAN.
Know who provides the richest funding for the enviro$ claiming such exercises blast out the ear-drums of whales..?
The Peoples Republic of China..!
GOSH I WONDER WHY.
I don’t think many on the island of Taiwan do, though.
Rare earths weren’t needed that badly 30 years ago?
Existing rare earths mines weren’t regulated so tightly?
MAYBE you’re confusing two things. Submarine sonar training entails QUIET sounds. LOUD sounds (the whale ear busters) are used from ships to probe for undersea oil.
We could wish that China would get some environmental sense. Its rivers are toxic waste sewers while its cities are smog hell.
Open the mines B Clinton closed and China takes a back seat in rare earth production.
W’s fault?
your image didn’t make it
