Trump Eyes a New Real-Estate Purchase: Greenland
WSJ ^ | Aug. 15, 2019 | Vivian Salama, Rebecca Ballhaus and Andrew Restuccia

WASHINGTON—President Trump made his name on the world’s most famous island. Now he wants to buy the world’s biggest.

The idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland has captured the former real-estate developer’s imagination, according to people familiar with the deliberations, who said Mr. Trump has, with varying degrees of seriousness, repeatedly expressed interest in buying the ice-covered autonomous Danish territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans.

In meetings, at dinners and in passing conversations, Mr. Trump has asked advisers whether the U.S. can acquire Greenland, listened with interest when they discuss its abundant resources and geopolitical importance, and, according to two of the people, has asked his White House counsel to look into the idea.

Some of his advisers have supported the concept, saying it was a good economic play, two of the people said, while others dismissed it as a fleeting fascination that will never come to fruition. It is also unclear how the U.S. would go about acquiring Greenland even if the effort were serious.

With a population of about 56,000, Greenland is a self-ruling part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and while its government decides on most domestic matters, foreign and security policy is handled by Copenhagen. Mr. Trump is scheduled to make his first visit to Denmark early next month, although the visit is unrelated, these people said.

Dear Californians,

The rest of America never liked you and we traded you for Greenland. You’re Danes now. You can expect your shipment of rotten fish by the end of the week.

A not widely publicized item:

The deal over Alaska was even sweeter than we commonly know.

The sale was made on a ¢/acre basis. The American team picked the closing date and time when the tide was at its highest so the minimum amount of land was exposed.

According to the story, that small detail caused the sales price to be lower by a significant amount compared to what it could have been had an average shoreline profile been used.

The story was told by an official Alaska government representative, so I have no doubt (?) that it’s ABSOLUTELY gospel truth

If global warming is real, then it’s a great investment, since the ice cap will shrink and provide easy access to more minerals. It might even get “green” again, like it was back in the Medieval warming period when it got named “Greenland”. I think it’s a great idea. With global warming, it will be a great vacation destination some day. A Florida in the north.

Further back (though I do not buy the extreme dating or the current scare)

Fossil DNA Proves Greenland Once Had Lush Forests ;

Ancient Greenland was green. New Danish research has shown that it was covered in conifer forest and had a relatively mild climate. The research is painting a picture which is overturning all previous assumptions about biological life and the climate in Greenland. The findings also show evidence of ice in Greenland during the Eemian interglacial period 125,000 years ago, which indicates that although we are now confronted with global warming, the whole ice sheet will probably not melt and bring about the tremendous sea-level rises which have been the subject of so much discussion.

The research results are the first direct proof that there was forest in southern Greenland. Furthermore Willerslev found genetic traces of insects such as butterflies, moths, flies and beetles. But when was that? According to most scientific theories to date, all of southern Greenland and most of the northern part were ice-free during the last interglacial period 125,000 years ago, when the climate was 5 degrees warmer than the interglacial period we currently live in.

Not if U.S governing law pertaining to Greenland matches the practice of the U.S. in the 19th century. People had to buy land from the government, which today overwhelming remains the largest owner of land west of the Mississippi.

They are valuable for their rare earth minerals, a key component to manufacturing energy dense capacitors and batteries.

They’re also important because they are literally one of the only developed sources of rare earth minerals outside of China and not held by a Chinese corporation.

The only convenient, friendly supplier of rare earth metals that isn’t Chinese or mined by Chinese companies is GREENLAND.

And the Great State of Greenland gives its three Electoral College votes to Donald J. Trump!
