He did exactly what he should of but I could see a sympathetic civil suit jury cringing at the multiple shots he put into him after on the ground.
I could see that happening during the trial:
Lawyer - “Why did you shoot him so many times?”
Defender - “Because he still had the gun in his hand.”
Lawyer - “But he wasn’t going to use it. He was already dead.”
Defender - “Sorry, but I didn’t bring my Star Trek medical Tricorder with me to find out from a distance.”
