While congress is giving free stuff why not just retire early to raise a family. Get paid 100% of whatever a person was making prior to the family leave. This will get a lot of votes along with free electoral college for everyone.

How in the world can an employer trying to run a business pay people for 3 MONTHS who aren’t working?

This is full fledged socialism. Insanity. You want a kid? Make some sacrifices. We did. Stop expecting everyone else to cover your butt.

Maybe employers should be required to make the first 6 months car payments for new employees so they can afford to come to work. Just about as “logical”

Though it only applies to 2.1 million federal employees and only covers time off for the birth or adoption of a child, proponents of the legislation have described as a first step toward paid family leave and paid medical leave benefits for all American workers.

The very last people who should be getting any handouts are federal employees. We’re already on the hook for > 100 trillion for their pension and medical. They don’t need anything else from us.

Pandering.

This makes me sick. So unfair to single, childless, or older couples. why do they have to cover for people with kids (even more) and have pay that should go to them being used to cover benefits for a small group.

Make financial choices, save and plan. It’s not the employers responsibility.

Why not infinite paid leave?

They shouldn’t be so stinghy with other peoples’ money.

But both sides are poised to pass legislation that will guarantee 12 weeks of paid parental leave for all federal employees.

Give them up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave. Ridiculous to give them paid leave, let them use up their accrued vacation and sick time if they want to be out that long - that's what people are supposed to do. In my jobs, requests for time off beyond 2 weeks were regularly denied by management. These federal workers are spoiled.

Isn’t China where the women are free for 15 minutes to have the baby and then it’s back to the rice paddy. Does China really restrict couples to two children?

I’m so old, I can remember things like employer health insurance benefits covered most of the cost for my two kids and any time off was paid using my unused vacation days or paid sick days. We did alright at the time.

Isn’t 12 weeks a bit excessive. How about 2 weeks?

Out here in rural BumF*ck Texas, we still have babies at home and some prefer home schooling them until they are accepted into U.T. So send us a check that we can cash down at the gas station and we will put it to good use.

Being self-employed (cattle/goat rustlers, METH lab technicians, Wine/Beer/Moonshine distillers, bootleggers, hemp farmers, landscapers, etc.) we generate cash under table and pay little or no taxes compared to our Urban counterparts. We could always use the extra government cash to upgrade or replace the equipment used in our operations. The F-150 is getting old and the lab equipment is worn or obsolete. /s

Our motto is “In GOD we trust, everybody else pays cash”. But if you need a loan, that can be arranged too. /s

NO!
with thousands of federal employees they should just trade shifts with others so no one is “off” for family leave.

They should be cross trained so others can fill their job if need be.

This is tax payer monies and time nd should be used wisely, not some private industry which can do as it pleases.

12 weeks represents 23% of a work year of 52 weeks.

Federal employers or private employer-—that is a huge burden to absorb.

Ask ANY worker over the age of 50 & see how much ‘paid family leave’ they got in their working lifetime...

The answer is ZERO-—NADA-—ZIP—NOTHING.

IF we got pregnant, the burden was on us to take care of our lives. Many of us NEVER had ANY ‘health benefits’ during those years, either. IF we had a baby-—we were usually back to work in less than 2 weeks, and an older family member was our ‘babysitter’. IF the mother was breast feeding, she pumped milk & stored it for use during her work shift.

The burden on a business is cumbersome & not fair.

IF I were thinking about opening a business in this atmosphere, I would think harder & probably NOT do so.

IF there ever was a poster child example of WHY every government—Federal & state needs to have a rule about SINGLE ITEM BILLS, this is it.

This family leave bill was PIGGY-BACKED on the back of the ‘critical defense spending bill.

EVERY SINGLE MEMBER of Congress should be railroaded out of their seats for this flim-flam.

Disgusting.
