Impeachment moves to Senate. Get ready for a scramble — and a January surprise
Washington Examiner ^ | December 16,2019 | by Byron York

Schumer is not trying to convince all 53 Senate Republicans to support his proposal. He just needs four. There are 47 Democrats in the Senate. If Schumer can persuade four GOP senators to join Democrats, they'll have a majority of 51 and can force the calling of new witnesses. Of course, Schumer is counting on Democrats voting as a bloc against the president, which is probably a good bet.

If Schumer gets what he wants, it seems hard to believe that will be the end of it. The request for more witnesses appears designed to lead not to closure but to reopening the case against Trump. In this way, if Democrats can introduce new testimony in the trial, they can say the new testimony has raised new questions that will require new investigation. And new investigation will require more new witnesses, which will surely lead to more new questions, which ...

Indeed, Schumer and his colleagues have prepared the way to characterize any move to limit the trial's scope as an effort to hide wrongdoing from the American people. "To engage in a trial without the facts coming out is to engage in a cover-up," he said Monday.

bottom line is, Republicans should not believe for one minute that the campaign to remove the president will rely only on the case Democrats have built in the House. Schumer and other party leaders will scramble for new information to throw at the president, and at Republicans, until it is over. The GOP, and the White House, need to be ready.

Can’t a motion be made by one Senator to dismiss and one second and it is over in the Senate? Just a thought!

Barr and Durham need to start the indictments and prosecutions. This will shut them up and shut them down

They need 4 Rs. That doesn’t sound like a lot.

I wonder if they have them already.

It would have to be Rs that believe that they can win even when voting with the Ds on this

I doubt there are four GOP Senators that want to relive the circus of the Kavanaugh hearings. Not even Romney would go for that.

Schumer is just playing a game...being his usual ____.

They could have subpoened them during the inquiry. They even withdrew a couple.

The letters the House sent out were courtesy letters asking folks to testify...There was no need to respond to any of them. Such a farce.

I believe Schummer is actually fishing for a leak on whether the Repubs will call any witnesses.

One of those "Be careful what you ask for".

They hadn’t ought to push this much farther.

I think you might get Collins and Mitt, but other than that I don’t think anyone’s voting against Trump. It’s political suicide.

They are going to get GOP numbers to crater and they will be in such a small minority no Dem would bother to do deals with them any more except for the wealth tax on all their ill-gotten gains from years of political service to the taxpayer.

If Schumer gets four Republicans on his side, the GOP may as well pack it in because they're going to lose the Senate next year.

Even Mitt Romney has been surprisingly quiet as of late ... because the RNC is raising boatloads of money and he knows damn well that if they don't present a united front against an obvious Democratic hit-job then the GOP has no reason to exist.

If I was Mitch McConnell I would seriously consider not even letting this get to January. If the House passes any articles of impeachment, then have the Senate vote on them within 24 hours and send the Senate home for Christmas.

I imagine that the corrupt dems have enough dirt on more than 4 republicans - getting 4 votes should be no problem.

Schumer would like more witnesses to drag this out. When asked if he would allow more than the four he named, he said he would consider it but ruled out "conspiracy" witness (i.e. Hunter Biden). He won't agree to any other witnesses, and he won't get his.

He is just teeing up a talking point for when the Senate votes to acquit.

Chuckie doesn’t want an extended trial. Conducted in the manner that the Dims did in the House with the made for T.V. witnesses (Biden x 2, Schiff, wistlebolwer, Comey et all) will not go well for him.

If it drags on in the senate, it cripples the presidential campaign of Democrat senators.

I don’t know what the constraints are, but if I were McConnell, I’d go full offense and use this as an opportunity to expose the process. Bring in everyone who was a player in what lead us to this point, and question them about who they were in communication with, who they got information from, and drill down into what sort of coordination and potential conspiracy has occurred. The independents in this country are very very sympathetic to victims of overreach. A case needs to be made where the real abuse of power lies, and conspiracies need to be exposed. Unless I am wrong, I suspect that we have a lot of intel from our members of judiciary, intelligence, and other committees, as well as from Trump’s administration, to guide McConnell on exactly who is in the food chain on this stuff.

You know what really bugs me (besides this fake impeachment crap) since our POTUS has been elected the news has constantly been about this junk and not shining the light on his great real accomplishments for the United States.

Of which there are many and they are significant.
