But you have to start it in a key low enough for folks with a normal vocal range to hit the high notes.

I mentally have a ‘black’ list of singers who think they have to put their personal touch on the Anthem.

What they do is to put Whitney Houston's personal touch on the anthem, not their own. There's the national anthem, and then there's the Whitney Houston national anthem. The latter seems to be more popular among singers than the former.

I admit to being inconsistent about this, because I loved Whitney Houston's version. She was so good that she could get away with it -- once. Once was enough. Her many imitators should not even try.
