Rod Rosenstein admits to leaking text messages between Peter Strzok, Lisa Page

Former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was behind the leak of text messages between the FBI ‘s Peter Strzok and Lisa Page to the press.

A court filing by the Department of Justice late Friday revealed the admission in a five-page statement by Rosenstein on the text messages between the FBI agent and lawyer back in 2016 as they were both working on investigations, Politico reported.

(Image: YouTube screenshot) Rosenstein, who stepped down from his position last year, apparently released the messages as a way to protect the FBI employees who criticized then-candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign. Before Friday’s disclosure, it had not been known who had authorized the release of about 375 messages to the press in December 2017.

“With the express understanding that it would not violate the Privacy Act and that the text messages would become public by the next day in any event, I authorized [Justice’s Office of Public Affairs] to disclose to the news media the text messages that were being disclosed to Congressional committees,” Rosenstein wrote in his statement.

The Justice Department is seeking to dismiss a lawsuit by Strzok that challenges his firing and seeks damages for invasion of privacy. Page filed a separate lawsuit against the DOJ last year, and both have claimed that the leaking of their text messages violated the Privacy Act.

“The Department’s Office of Public Affairs … recommended providing the text messages to the media because otherwise, some congressional members and staff were expected to release them intermittently before, during and after the hearing, exacerbating the adverse publicity for Mr. Strzok, Ms. Page and the Department,” Rosenstein wrote.

“Providing the most egregious messages in one package would avoid the additional harm of prolonged selective disclosures and minimize the appearance of the Department concealing information...

Rosenstein was a true intelligence insider and quintessential palace-politics gamer. He wanted dirt, and control, on everybody.

The law is the law. You don’t get to violate it just because you think your way of doing things is more fair.

Rosenstein was under no obligation to shield his employees from the consequences of their actions.

What the hell? Is everybody who works at the DOJ and FBI a leaker? If they leak, they’re getting something in return from whoever they’re leaking to.

It’s not a leak if an official with the legal authority to release information to the public uses that authority.

Not a day goes by without someone of FR demanding that Trump authorize the release of some information or other. That would not be a “leak” either.

Everybody’s on the take down at the #swamp. From the guy at the congressional “pharmacy” to the head of the FBI and everyone at the continuing Clinton/Obama State Dept and DOJ.

What’s Barr doing over there, anyway?

“ At one point the letter freaks were telling us Rosenstein was a white hat.”

Some thought that a possibility, but that was a minority view.

Are you upset that so many people are part of this group that expects
them to all think for themselves and form their own opinions after
doing the research?

I might surprise you that we don’t always come to the same conclusions, and that we’re OK with that.

Two things about the beltway culture.

One, everyone is married or related or went to the same schools.

Two, anyone will leak or backstab anyone else to get ahead or CYA.

The fbi interviews you so long that they want to create a contradiction in your testimony and then get you on a technicality. They also deliberarwly do not record interviews because they can’t doctor the interviews as successfully as destroying or modifying handwritten notes.
