Former CDC chief speaks out on coronavirus risk for the U.S.

The first case of the mysterious pneumonia-like virus, which has killed at least six people since first being reported in China, has been confirmed in the U.S. Former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and President and CEO of Resolve To Save Lives, Dr. Thomas Frieden, weighs in on what to do if symptoms arise and what precautions are being taken to fight the spread of the disease.

Health officials around the world are keeping an eye on the outbreak of a new pneumonia-like virus that has killed at least six people and sickened some 300 others since it was first reported in China at the end of 2019.

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced “enhanced health screenings” at several major U.S. airports for passengers arriving from or traveling through China's Wuhan province.

Hundreds of people have been infected by the virus. The first case of coronavirus in the United States was confirmed Tuesday in Seattle, after a man arrived home last week -- before the airport health screenings were announced.

What is the disease?

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses named after their appearance, a crown, said Dr. Mark Rupp, an infectious disease expert at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

There are many types and a few are known to infect humans. Some cause colds and respiratory illnesses, while others have evolved into illnesses such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

SARS began in China and infected some 8,000 people during a 2002-2003 outbreak. Approximately 770 people died after it spread to other

Interesting, SARS infected 8000 over the course of a year. And this new virus just hit 400+ known people this week; doubling over the weekend. The next 10 days will be very telling.

"pneumonia-like virus"

Pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lung affecting primarily the small air sacs known as alveoli.

Viruses, bacteria, toxins and irritants can cause pneumonia but they cannot be "like" pneumonia

SARS originated in a wet market, from civet cats. Filth and nastiness. Looks like the animal to human jump might have been from a similar market in this ilness. From your link:

Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak in Wuhan, China reportedly had some link to a large seafood and animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. However, a growing number of patients reportedly have not had exposure to animal markets, suggesting limited person-to-person spread is occurring, though it’s unclear how easily or sustainably this virus is spreading between people.

This may or may not be the opening salvo in the next pandemic.

Too soon to know, but definitely not too soon to pay attention.

As for all those “wake me when...” type posters, ignorance is bliss. It would be cruel to wake them up.

FreeRepublic has been an excellent source of info on things like this in the past. Hopefully it will this time also.

I live in Snohomish county, Washington. The 1st confirmed patient in the U.S. is in the largest hospital in our county.

The patient is a male U.S. citizen. Three days after returning from a trip to China, he went to an urgent care facility here and was sent home.

Fortunately, the doctors at the urgent care facility did the tests necessary to confirm this new virus and had him transported to the hospital as soon as they knew the next day. He is being kept in isolation at that hospital.

He is doing well right now. Initial reports said he was very ill. Reports last night said he was in stable condition. Reports in the paper this morning say he does not seem that sick.

Personally, I think all reports on his condition are media speculation. I doubt the people who really know are talking.

One of the current unknowns is how contagious this is, and when a person becomes contagious. It is nearly certain he was contagious while at the urgent care facility and at his home. HOW contagious is not something anyone currently knows.

So... Contact tracing is going to be difficult.

Side Note: My wife was at a local urgent care facility the same day he was. She has an impaired immune system due to cancer and the treatments for it (she is doing very well). We do not think it was the same urgent care facility, but the news media is not saying which one it was.
