A woman who was working as a tour bus guide was reinfected with the COVID-19 coronavirus, testing positive after having recovered from a prior infection, said a local government agency in Japan.
Osakas prefectural government confirmed that a woman in her 40s, who tested positive twice, was a resident in Osaka. She tested positive Wednesday after developing chest pains and a sore throat, the government told public broadcaster NHK.
She had first tested positive in late January and was released from the hospital on Feb. 1 and was declared coronavirus-free on Feb. 6, the government said.
However, officials said she started feeling chest pain and throat pain on Feb. 19. After going to the doctor several times, she tested positive again about a week later, according to the broadcaster.
The unnamed woman wore a mask and stayed at home after leaving the medical facility, reported NHK. She didnt go to work and had no close contact with anyone, but she is now hospitalized somewhere in Osaka prefecture, officials said.
Osaka health officials believe the virus that remained in the woman multiplied or she was reinfected. But an expert told NHK that typically, people who contract COVID-19 develop antibodies so they can avoid being reinfected, but he noted that individuals who dont develop enough antibodies could be prone to contracting it again.
Health Minister Katsunobu Kato said in parliament the government would need to keep tabs on condition of those previously discharged, as health experts analyzed the implications of testing positive for the virus after an initial recovery, Reuters reported.
The number of cases in Japan rose on Thursday to more than 200, up from the official tally of 186 late on Wednesday. On the main northern island of Hokkaido, 15 new cases, including two children under the age of 10,

Perhaps a relapse and not necessarily a second time?
My bet is present testing is far from 100% accurate.
Take notice
From what I have read, it sounds like she never truly recovered fully in the first place
14% of those “cured” in China in one area are now positive again and 3 days ago China announced that after being “cured” you have to go into a 14 day quarantine
so what does that tell you

Can you refer us to a reliable news link that gives us this figure? Thanks.

Lookner has been reporting the test only catches 30-40% of the cases...(false negatives)
That is why many are tested multiple times
Highly unlikely that she was “re-infected”, especially when she was isolated at home. I suspect the infection was not cleared from some areas. Organs? Hopefully this does not turn out to be common. Maybe testing of blood, urine and stool in addition to sputum before being cleared, along with quarantine and a follow up test after some specified time period.
Yeah she probably was not wholly cured.
You guys do know that after you get the regular flu, you do catch it again as well?
If you are going to sit around on the internet breathlessly reading news feeds on this, then at least TRY to learn more about it.

Dr Song Tie, deputy director of the Guangdong Centre of Disease Control And Prevention (Guangdong CDC), at a Tuesday (Feb 25) briefing said, There is no clear conclusion on why it happens and whether such patients could still be infectious.

Like gum or dog shit on your shoe. Hard to get rid of completely.
I suspect the testing for the virus needs improvement and could currently be producing false negatives.
The woman’s initial treatment could have made her feel well, while the virus - missed by a false negative test - lingered in her body. As treatment retreated after she left the hospital, the virus regained strength in her and she felt ill again. I suspect that above a second infection.
That is what I am hoping.
Ping
No you don’t.
You do not get reinfected with the same strain of flu.
HOWEVER, since there are usually multiple strains in any flu season circulating you can get infected with another strain of the flu.
Raise your hand if you didn’t pick up on “tour bus guide”
If she was not completely cured, and it’s a relapse, we can breathe more easily. If people do not develop immunity to the disease after getting it, we’re screwed.
What is the number of people who got it a second time?
About 25 years ago (my Air Force career), I came back from the Mideast with TB. I went through the six months of the drugs and that kinda wiped that problem out, but the doctor said that I’d always show a false positive on the test if it was applied again.
I would suspect that this is a different type of virus, and the test have not matured to the point where you’d expect. It may be that when you feel completely over the thing and ready to check out of the hospital or go back to work...that you are only at the 75-percent point.
