Mitt Romney called on the federal government to send every adult $1,000 immediately to help cope financially with the economic damage caused by the spread of the coronavirus.

“Every American adult should immediately receive $1,000 to help ensure families and workers can meet their short-term obligations and increase spending in the economy,” Romney, a Utah Republican senator and 2012 presidential nominee, said in a statement.

Can we just do away with the pretend-notion that Mitt is in any way a Republican?

Once and for all?

It needs to be targeted to those that will be forced to stay home. But it is better than tax cuts for people who are not working. This is going to hurt the working poor heavily and we need to help them. The highly paid can afford to sit at home for a few weeks without pay. The working poor cant. Tax cuts are not the solution.

I would rather see a complete reset. Anything you owe on March 1st, is not sue until May 1st. Mortgage, rent, any debts.

If Everyone takes the hit—equally, we can just pick up in two months. Obviously, you pay for goods and services. But debt payments are deferred.

So stupid that it doesn’t even deserve the use of bandwidth.

Actually, I don’t want the money. I don’t mind the federal government mitigating their own damage though.

In this case, the government has forced shutdowns of businesses. That is a “taking”, and we should compensate businesses for that. If we had a way of doing it, i would give money to any business that had to send workers home due to coronavirus, if that money was used to pay those workers for their average weekly salary as if they were working.

This would mitigate some of the impact of the virus. Business could then be taken care of with tax credits, to some degree.

The money would help someone like my daughter who works at a day care center. She went from 35 hours a week to 15 hours a week. I can only imagine how many working people are suffering the same hardship as she is. Hopefully it won’t last too long and she can get back to working her normal hours.

seems the administration thinks it’s a good idea too.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Tuesday that the Trump administration wants to send checks to Americans “in the next two weeks” in an effort to help people cope with the economic fallout due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re looking at sending checks to Americans immediately,” Mnuchin said during a press briefing from the White House. “Americans need cash now, the president wants to get cash now. I mean now—in the next few weeks.”

One way to get money out there in a hurry would be to send $1000 to everyone getting Social Security along with their next payment. As an 81 year old I can see the extra problems. I may need to pay to get food and medicine delivered while sheltering in place rather than walking to the store or clinic. I have a small extra income from renting some rooms. One renter is a nurse, and what if she gets sick and can’t pay the rent? Another has a job but might have delayed pay checks while working from home. Working from home the utility bills I pay for their dwelling will be higher. Just a few, probably more that I will experience soon.

Years ago when I once collected unemployment it took almost a month to get it in place. Also, if one is sheltering in place or quarantined how do you get to the unemployment office?

One useful measure would be to move IRS deadline from April 15 to a later date. My local government has just given a 90 day extension for filing business taxes. They forgot to give a 90 day extension to people filing a personal income tax which includes questions about business income. I and many others will have problems paying IRS if our renters/customers are not paying us.

This is not new, it has been done before. We all got a check directly from IRS if I remember correctly.

Congress definitely needs to have IRS postpone April 15 deadline for filing taxes, since a lot of people who do not already have their money deducted will be having problems if they loose jobs or business income. My local govt. proposes to allow businesses 90 extra days to file taxes, but failed to allow personal income filers a delay even though there is a section where you have to list other income like IRS Schedule C, E, and f.

Call your Congresscritters if you want to have the April 15th deadline extended. 202-224-3121. Ask operator to forward you to your Representative or Senator, or give you the phone number(s) to call yourself. You are likely to get a message to leave a comment, so have one in mind before you call.

The elderly are being urged to shelter in place. An easy way to get that money in the hands of people who need it would be to include the $1000 in the next Social Security payment. It costs money to order food and medicine delivered. Utility bills are higher if you are staying home.

It would also help if Congress has IRS extend the April 15th filing deadline to a later date. People are having a harder time paying taxes if they are self employed or own a small business. My local government plans to extend business taxes 90 days, but forgot that the personal income tax form includes lines for the income to be included on personal business tax forms that may not be ready by April 15th. Call Congress operator 202-224-3121 and ask for your Representative or Senator, or their phone number.

Let’s see, 300,000,000 people @ $1,000 ea is 300 billion bucks. And the democrats will want that to be monthly, so I think that quickly adds up to more than our government brings in in a year. And this will be especially hard to do seeing as most people won’t have jobs, therefore very little ‘revenue’ will be coming in to the treasury. Guess we’ll have to borrow it from China.

Actually, Romney said adults, but still a hefty sum. Should the recent tax savings for the very rich be cut back a bit? Should major corporations that pay NO taxes have to pay a minimum at least during this crisis? I don’t have the answer.

Listen, if we’d just agree to give all voting age adults a $1,000 per month (plus free college, free healthcare, free childcare and free school lunches) out of the treasury there’d be a lot less poverty. /s
