President Trump announced Sunday his approval for Ford, General Motors and Tesla to produce desperately needed ventilators during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The president said in a tweet that the auto companies will be permitted to make ventilators and other metal products, FAST!
Go for it auto execs, lets see how good you are? he posted, tagging incoming White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
President Trump signed the Defense Production Act last week which permits the administration to draft the American industry into manufacturing needed medical supplies during a crisis. He said Friday he was putting the law "into gear" but it remained unclear to what extent he was using the order.
White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said last week that General Motors CEO Mary Barra offered to use the companys factories to develop ventilators. Tech billionaire and founder of Tesla tweeted last week that the company will make ventilators if there is a shortage.

Trump gets it done!!
China is going to regret letting this Virus loose.
Why they need permission? This country is so ...
I believe that the biggest result will be “companies coming home.” I’d live to see Levi come home.....that is America.
Sure they dont need permission pursay, but doing so under the ACT guarantees their cost of re-tooling.
It won’t be that fast. It takes time to build the machines that make the parts. I’m betting that they are currently pulling out all the manufacturing equipment for making obsolete (but still fully functional) models and operating them.
Way more than half the country is going to want a lot of products made here now that we see what happens in a crisis.
We depend on other countries for so much and that will change.
I hope.
Back in the 2008 turmoil, Ford REFUSED a government bailout. GM didn’t.
Evidently, GM has made them before but I don’t know how long ago. Hopefully not way back in Frigidaire by General Motors days
Might be quicker....basic design using relays and components readily available....no integrated circuits or flat panel displays made in China
No other nation in the world would ever be able to do this. Not since WWII has this country seen this kind of production change in U.S. factories. We did it then...and we’ll do it now. Granted, it’s not on the scale it was when factories were producing war machines, but it’s still happening, here, is the good, old USA!!
When I was a kid, we had an old Frigidaire in our cellar. It had a teeny, tiny, little freezer that you could barely fit two metal ice cube trays in.
It’ll be a basic life saving ventilator.... no more , no less.
I’ve got one in my shop, gutted of the rusted out fridge components, that I saved from the dump because it just looks cool. Got an emblem that looks like an emblem from a car and says by Frigidaire by General Motors. I’ve got an RV fridge that’s about the exact same size so I’m going to try and retrofit the components and make is my beer fridge for the shop. Electric goes out, it swaps to propane. Saved it from the dump over 20 years ago and it’s made many moves, including from FL to MO, back to FL and back to MO. That GM has a few miles on it
20th century
Do you realize that for every 10 people that go on a ventilator only 1 or 2 people come off of it? If your being put on a ventilator then your pretty much done. A lot of money will be made for something that will not help.
Mine's in primer and I want to put some kind of graphics on it when I paint it. Don't know what. Some old logo of a product, Coke, Pepsi etc.
