Hours after President Trump signed a stimulus bill that includes $25 million for the Kennedy Center, its president Deborah Rutter told the National Symphony Orchestra that their paychecks would end this week.
The Kennedy Center a performing arts center and memorial for President John F. Kennedy canceled performances from March 12 to May 10 as government officials restrict large gatherings to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
In a conference call Friday night, Rutter told orchestra leaders that the 96 musicians would receive their last paycheck on April 3 and that they will not be paid until the arts center reopens. In addition, she said their health-care benefits would stop at the end of May if the arts center is still closed at that time. The announcement was characterized by several NSO members as a shock.
Ed Malaga, president of Local 161-710 of the American Federation of Musicians, described the decision as outrageous and said the union has filed a grievance challenging what it believes is an illegal action.
This decision, from an organization with an endowment of nearly $100 million, is not only outrageous coming after the musicians had expressed their willingness to discuss ways to accommodate the Kennedy Center during this challenging time it is also blatantly illegal under the parties collective bargaining agreement. That agreement specifically requires that the Center provide six weeks notice before it can stop paying musicians for economic reasons, Malaga said in a statement.

They have to spend that dank money on defeating Trump, not music
I would hope that someone would keep track of where the money goes. Looks like it’s already not going where it’s supposed to?
I suspect that the $600 + whatever unemployment insurance the state or district offers is probably close to what they are currently getting in their paycheck, if not more.
Maybe they should give themselves a quick cure from TDS and get on the Trump Train for 2020.
Screw their Overlords.
Get with the program.
Technically the law requires that the Kennedy Center’s programming be sustained through private funds, so where exactly does the $25M go? Whoever slipped that into the bill knows exactly where it is going. Hopefully, Trump can find a way to claw that money back. The endowment should be able to cover them for almost a year at some reduced pay. But being “the arts”, you would think the limousine liberals in DC and their friends in Hollywood would be lining up to write checks for these folks.
Not sure which question to ask first: Why is the KC not using the money to pay its musicians on haitus or Why in the HECK is KC specifically targered in the bail out???
There are hundreds, maybe thousands of orgs lik KC throughout tye country I bet they do not have such earmarks.
“Rutter told her staff earlier in the week that she was suspending her $1.2 million salary until the crisis ended”
Who the heck makes 1.2 million dollars a year? The President? The President of Harvard? This salary is an outrage. Ridiculous. There is ZERO this woman could be doing to justify this compensation.
Sorry, I’m a capitalist and all, but this is BS.
Surprise, surprise.
Recall that ValJar was inserted into the KC as a parting gift from obama.
There are those who earn and deserve such a salary, but not for what is being done here.
If you perform a service that has such high intrinsic value or your abilities allow others to make profits that can justify your salary.
i.e.
Very skilled surgeons.
Very skilled athletes.
“” artists.
“” actors.
“” engineers.
Also, some CEO’s are so indispensable that they are worth the astronomical salaries they pull down...like Steve Jobs
and so on....

How much you wanna bet a good portion of them vote Democrat and will continue to do so? Having never figured things out?
Yeah that’s what Trump will spend some time on.
Clawing back 25 million dollars from the kennedy arts center.
It will be his priority :)
I think he’s got better things to do.
Nothing because they won’t change. You’re right.
It’s just amazing how they never figure it out.
I implore President Trump to try to find some money in the budget to send them some of these.
;)
Trump funding his own defeat? GG. /s
