A grand-niece of President John F. Kennedy and her son drowned after rowing into the rough Chesapeake Bay in Maryland to recover a soccer ball, authorities and witnesses said Friday.

Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, and her 8-year-old son, Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean, got into the canoe around 4 p.m. Thursday outside her mother’s home in Shady Side, according to the Washington Post.

The child had been kicking a ball with other kids when it fell into the water, and the pair went to retrieve it amid high winds, her husband, David McKean, told the paper.

“[They] popped into a canoe to chase it down. They just got farther out than they could handle, and couldn’t get back in,” David McKean said.

The pair was later sucked into the South River where they drowned, Gov. Larry Hogan said at a press conference Friday.

McKean, 40, is the daughter of former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who she was visiting when the tragedy struck.

Terrible. Kathleen Townsend has had her Dad killed, a brother OD and now her daughter and grandson drown while visiting them.

And the brother who skiied into a tree. And the niece who OD'ed this summer. Not to mention the uncle who was assassinated and the cousin whose plane went down, and the uncle and aunt who likewise died in airplane crashes.

Things like this, lives lost chasing after a rubber ball or something similar, happened a century or two ago and earlier, but at least the families of those who died had the consolation that people it wasn’t considered acceptable to ridicule the deceased for dying in foolish ways.

I heard that Joe Kennedy was a key player in convincing FDR not to allow the German ocean liner St. Louis and its 937 passengers in, almost all Jewish, were turned away from the port of Miami, forcing the ship to return to Europe; more than a quarter died in the Holocaust.

I don't know if that's true or not. Roosevelt had other people advising him who were more closer and more trusted. Joe Kennedy did get the British government to take in some of the refugees on the ship.

#11. Don’t worry. Kathleen will use all these tragedies in her next political campaign for some forsaken government position. She’s that ambitious and callous.

If the Dems take the governorship next time, she’s in like Flint. She’ll have the “sympathy vote” from the sheeple.

As for the victims of this tragedy, RIP.

I have it in my head that they think they’re impervious to the standard dangers that lesser mortals such as we succumb to.

Absolutely! And wearing them helps even more! (Some folks will have them, because they’re required, but not wear them.)

The Kennedy gene pool sure has a difficult time with common everyday situations.

Well, there aren’t many left to feel that way. They’re a vanishing breed.

When my son went to one of those Boy Scout camps a couple of decade ago (the trips where they don’t call home and go on dangerous hikes) I gave him ONE rule:

“You are not in trouble if you lose your glasses, etc. Do not retrieve any lost items when you are hiking. There is not one thing you are bringing that is worth your life. It can all be replaced.”

Best advice I ever gave, there were two fatal accidents at that park, that week.

The Kennedys seem to make a habit of having these terrible accidents.

Almost all of them self-inflicted. Low IQ and arrogance is a dangerous combination.

I don't have much respect for the elitist Kennedy's but this is a very sad outcome....she was a mother of 3 and died along side her son....

prayers for all...

She’s that ambitious and callous.

Indeed. She's so bad that even with the name Kennedy she lost the governor's race to a Republican in the Peoples' Republic of Maryland of all places. I was not sorry for her loss that day, but am sorry for her loss this day.

I think you have hit the correct answer. The South River at Shadyside is wide and right at the Chesapeake Bay. The water is very cold now. The wind was blowing up to 40 mph from the northeast. They never had a chance. There are some rules that a pply to all of us.
