Reports out of Berlin tell of a German Arctic cruise ship being fired on by a Venezuelan naval vessel, which then rammed the passenger liner, sinking itself in the process.
No, this is not a story that appeared in The Onion.
The Jerusalem Post says that the incident occurred on March 30 and took place in international waters.
The Iranian regime-allied Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro accused the captain of the RCGS RESOLUTE cruise ship of “terrorism and piracy" and sought to force the ship into a new direction on the high seas. The cruise ship, which had no passengers on board and was sailing under a Portuguese flag, has a reinforced hull that enables it to sail through ice water.
An unarmed passenger ship accused of "terrorism and piracy"? Well, it is the Venezuelan navy.
Columbia Cruise Services continued, stating that “Shortly after mid-night, the cruise vessel was approached by an armed Venezuelan navy vessel, which via radio questioning the intentions of the RCGS RESOLUTE’s presence and gave the order to follow to Puerto Moreno on Isla De Margarita. As the RCGS RESOLUTE was sailing in international waters at that time, the Master wanted to reconfirm this particular request resulting into a serious deviation from the scheduled vessel’s route with the company DPA.”

Did the cruise ship lend assistance and pick up the survivors?
This is undeniably an act of war, but against whom? The ship is owned by a German company, but is registered in Portugal.
Venezuela is reaching Somalia levels. I have no doubt the ship captain and his commander back at base merely intended to loot the ship once they had it back at port.

There were no deaths among the Venezuelan marines aboard the war ship. The Venezuelan authorities returned the navy personnel to safety.
Not conclusive, but doesn't sound like Resolute picked up any Venezuelans.
That would be a tough call for the German captain - which crew was bigger? Empty cruise ship, or Venezuelan Navy? We know which one was better armed. Would you allow them on board? Yet there are rules at sea, you're supposed to provide assistance...
They thought the ship was stealing salt water.

Article said the crew were safe -- picked up by Venezuelan Navy.
Other reports have said that the cruise ship did stand by to try to pick up survivors of the Venezuelan ship, although if I were the captain, I might have opted to get out of Dodge. After all, they had just fired on my ship and then tried to sink it by raming -- very hostile acts.

In a unrelated story...
The Venezuelan army attempted to surround and capture a troop of Columbian girl scouts. The girl scouts, selling cookies as part of a fund raising drive, were located at the outskirts of the central market of the small town of Manjuega.
Caught entirely off guard, the girls began throwing the cookies at the attacking Venezuelan unit of about 40 soldiers. With roughly equal numbers, the scouts tipped several of the tables over on their sides to form a type of shield. After several minutes, the Venezuelan army retreated to a safe distance and may have crossed back into Venezuela.
There were no injuries reported among the girl scouts, but several of the Venezuelan soldiers were hit in the eyes with Thin Mints, were left behind and required medical attention.
Maybe the Navy ship was going to seize illegal toilet paper on the cruise ship.........
Reminds me of the climax scene in “Hunt for Red October” when the Russian sub trying to sink the Red October and Remus, sinks itself! A terrific book and a terrific movie?
Did the sinking crew salvage the toilet paper? Inquiring minds want to know.
