China, Germany's Bild in war of words after newspaper scorched Xi over coronavirus

China and the largest newspaper in Germany have been in a war of words, according to reports, over the role of President Xi Jinping in the coronavirus pandemic.

"You [Xi], your government and your scientists had to know long ago that coronavirus is highly infectious, but you left the world in the dark about it. Your top experts didn't respond when Western researchers asked to know what was going on in Wuhan. You were too proud and too nationalistic to tell the truth, which you felt was a national disgrace,” wrote Julian Reichelt, editor-in-chief of Germany’s largest paper, Bild, which had questioned if China “should pay for the massive economic damage the coronavirus is inflicting worldwide.”

Reichelt added: “You rule by surveillance. You wouldn't be president without surveillance. You monitor everything, every citizen, but you refuse to monitor the diseased wet markets in your country. You shut down every newspaper and website that is critical of your rule, but not the stalls where bat soup is sold. You are not only monitoring your people, you are endangering them – and with them, the rest of the world.”

He's not accustomed to this sort of blistering critique.

Better put some ice on that.

Thing that burns my ass worse than anything else, is that they shut down allowing people in Wuhan to travel around in
China, but they allow aircraft full of them to fly out and
infect the rest of the planet.

Their government basically acted like a crimes against
humanity villain, and the WHO carried their water.

China has a glass heart.
Bild just shattered it.
Every Chinese citizen will verbally, or physically, assault any non-Chinese they come in contact with. Their internet trolls will be on every site damning the rest of the world.

We are living in interesting times.

"You wouldn't be president without surveillance."

I'm sorry, while I applaud Bild for challenging Xi, this is an ignorant statement for two reasons:

First, Mr. Xi holds three offices, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC), President of the People's Republic of China (PRC), and Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC). Of the three, the office of President is a figurehead title with almost no power. His power comes from his support in the Party's Politburo and the party's Central Military Commission. The Presidency is merely an easier title to use when dealing with other countries.

Second, the surveillance state the Party has built is only icing on the cake. It allows them easier means of control, but the Party's power (and therefore Xi's) is built upon brute force. To be blunt, the Party is willing to kill people and do so in large numbers, that is how they have maintained control. Those they don't wish to kill, they imprison or restrict as they deem necessary. Force and fear don't need a survellance state, it just makes it easier to target the Party's real or imagined opponents.
