Harvard Magazine Calls for a “Presumptive Ban” on Homeschooling: Here Are 5 Things It Got Wrong
Foundation for Economic Education ^ | April 20, 2020 | Kerry McDonald

Author's Note: This is a copy of my submitted Letter to the Editor of Harvard Magazine regarding its recent article,“The Risks of Homeschooling.”

Dear Editor:

As a Harvard alum, longtime donor, education researcher, and homeschooling mother of four children in Cambridge, Massachusetts, I was shocked to read the article, “The Risks of Homeschooling,” by Erin O’Donnell in Harvard Magazine’s new May-June 2020 issue. Aside from its biting, one-sided portrayal of homeschooling families that mischaracterizes the vast majority of today’s homeschoolers, it is filled with misinformation and incorrect data. Here are five key points that challenge the article’s primary claim that the alleged “risks for children—and society—in homeschooling” necessitate a “presumptive ban on the practice”:

I’m grateful that the Harvard hit piece is making some widespread waves of rebuttal. Here’s a good article to combat the leftist insanity.

The Harvard professor that wrote the original piece had obviously never done even a cursory database search on the research that has been done on Home Schooling.

She displayed just an amazing amount of ignorance.

We gave Harvard 9 million dollars in the virus economic bailout bill. They have a fortune already in endowments.
A disgrace.

Pelosi and Schumer held all of us for ransom until they got their PBS and Planned Parenthood and other ridiculous basket case sympathy money awarded to boost their power.

Child’s earliest lessons in public school:

Trump is the evil white supremacist leader of the illegitimate United States, founded on slavery and the exploitation of women.

Right. You get a star and a cookie.

Now how many know the name of the greatest president in history? (Obama, Obama, Obama....)

The original article was a screed against home schooling and the POTENTIAL for bad outcomes from it. Left unsaid was the current and present BAD THINGS from its prime alternative, the public school process.

The declining metrics of their education of children and the increasing exposure to single spectrum cultural values. Input an eager child and ‘graduate’ a social justice warrior with a breath-taking lack of history, perspective and acceptance of differing viewpoints!

Tests run show people can only remember or pay attention three (3) ideas at a time (that’s how Ronald Reagan ran his elections and stayed focused on three ideas that the voters wanted done) so to expand that thought this article offers 5!

I noticed one thing when Trump read the names of the people who would be on his council/task force to reopen the USA.

Almost all sectors of the economy were covered.

The glaring omission were UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS.

And this garbage out of Harvard University is why UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS as well as MITT ROMNEY were not asked to help with their opinions.

Ben Franklin writing under the pseudonym Silence Dogood:
I reflected in my Mind on the extreme Folly of those Parents who, blind to their Children's Dullness, and insensible of the Solidity of their Skulls, because they think their Purses can afford it, will needs send them to the Temple of Learning [Harvard] where, for want of a suitable Genius, they learn little more than how to carry themselves handsomely and enter a Room genteelly (which might as well be acquired at a Dancing-School) and from whence they return, after Abundance of Trouble and Charge, as great Blockheads as ever, only more proud and self-conceited.

Has Harvard really changed in the nearly 300 years since that was written?

Considering she is associated with Harvard the amount of ignorance displayed is not amazing at all.

What we have now is NOT homeschooling. It is not even true distance learning. It is stop gap on the fly not in school learning. Home schooling families have prepared and are serious. True distance learning is well prepared for that environment. Do not let the media compare what is going on in most communities to either.
