President Donald Trump plans to order U.S. meat processing plants facing concerns about coronavirus outbreaks to stay open to protect the country’s food supply, a senior administration official said on Tuesday.

Trump is likely to sign an executive order later in the day using the Defense Production Act to mandate that the plants continue to function, the official said.

The order is designed to give companies such as Tyson Foods Inc and others more liability protection in case employees catch the virus as a result of having to go to work.

The order will also include guidance to minimize risk to workers who are especially vulnerable to the virus, the official said.

Got into a big shoving match with a FReeper Karen yesterday over whether Trump could do this.

Looks like I win.

Good. He hasn’t exercised enough authority in this. I assume this is a DPA mandate.

The content of your link is generally correct. The USDA will mandate many market ready animals be destroyed if the packing plants are unable to process. Nothing very scandalous about it, simply what is required. You need to remember, there are plenty more animals in the pipeline.

I don’t think it’s a mistake. Of course there will be special protections, etc, and people don’t have to work there if they don’t want to. But most of these workers are on the younger side, certainly under 60, and even if they get it will be just fine.

Maybe this can turn the tide on the (politically motivated) panic.

I’m not concerned that the workers are at any particular risk. This just opens governmnet micromanagement based on fear-mongering by the press.

Goes back to WW II. How do you think he was able to force GM to quit making cars and start making ventilators?

I don’t see government micromanaging it at all. The implicit threat isn’t that Mike Pence becomes the manager of operations at a Tyson’s meat plant. It’s that the government takes over the Tyson’s plant and brings in people from Hormel or Perdue to run it.

And as for the workforce, sucks to be them I guess.

The order will also include guidance to minimize risk to workers who are especially vulnerable to the virus, the official said.

The White House issued guidelines they wanted the states to meet before opening too. None of the states are following them so why should the meat processing plants do any different?
