On Tuesday, May 12, there will be a special election to replace former Democratic Congresswoman Katie Hill in Californias 25th Congressional District.
Hill was forced to resign in October of last year after acknowledging inappropriate sexual relations with a staffer and a throuple of other reasons but we dont have time to get into that.
The runoff will pit Democratic Assemblywoman and attorney Christy Smith against Republican fighter pilot Mike Garcia.
For some strange reason Smith has used the fact that Garcia was a military pilot against him in the campaign as if that somehow makes him unqualified to hold elected office.
Most recently, Smith attacked Garcias qualifications in an Indivisible Day of Action Video Call on April 25 with supporters.
Here is the transcript of what Smith had to say about Garcias credentials:
Smith: It is what it is. Did you guys know hes a pilot? I you know it had escaped me. (Laughter)
Unidentified man: I read about it on his campaign website.
Unidentified woman: Hes a pilot?
Smith: Yeah. (More laughter)
Unidentified man: And of course, the clown who lives in the White House you get his endorsements.
Smith: I sent to my team, we both logged on because we had to do this virtual coin toss and I texted my team and Im like, OK, hes got pictures of planes behind him and Ive got constitutional law books. (more laughter) The irony was
Unidentified man: I love that being a pilot gives him experience and knowledge in international affairs. (more laughter)
Smith: (Giggling) Yeah, it is
Unidentified man: You know, Amy McGrath is a former fighter pilot.
Smith: But shes not qualified. Yeah. Great.
Just to be clear, Mike Garcia graduated first in his class at flight school, earned perfect scores in advanced jet training and flew F-18 Super Hornets off an aircraft carrier in a combat zone.
Christy Smith is qualified to sit in the emergency exit row on Delta.
Good for you, Christy. Enjoy that extra leg room.
The idea that airplane pilots, or military personnel, are too dumb to serve in elected office is not only insulting, its crazy.
If being a trained fighter pilot makes you unfit for office, how do you explain George H. W. Bush, John McCain and George McGovern?
OK, OK, three incredibly bad examples. But you see my point.
Agree with them or not, none of those guys were stupid.
During the 2000 presidential campaign, Democrats, late-night comedians and the media tried to convince the public that then Texas Gov. George W. Bush was so slow he needed to be watered once a week.
But Terry Nelson, a Republican strategist and political director of the Bush-Cheney 2004 reelection campaign, told me that those charges never stuck.
In 2000, the Gore campaign made a serious mistake by condescendingly suggesting that Gov. Bush wasnt as smart as Gore. That flew in the face of what voters instinctively knew about Bush once they knew he had been a fighter pilot of one of the countrys most advanced combat jets during the Vietnam War. It didnt make sense and Gores smugness really backfired, Nelson said.
It should also be noted that for generations scores of people have moved to California to design, build and fly planes that helped our country win wars, transport people around the globe and fundamentally change the way the world operates. They arent dim, and many of them are also Christy Smiths constituents.
While not everyone is a lawyer (yet), other professions shouldnt be disqualified from holding public office.
Smiths sneering disdain for the honest work of her own voters not only makes her sound ignorant, it makes her uniquely unsuited to represent those people in elected office.
Heres hoping that Christy Smiths slimy attempt to take down a Navy pilot crashes and burns.
John Phillips can be heard weekdays from noon to 3 p.m. on The John Phillips Show on KABC/AM 790.
Okay, now that is funny.
I live in the district and voted for Garcia. Because hes a Republican, the media have ignored the fact hes Hispanic. I call Christy Smith Katie Hill without the kink.
Me too, about 6 miles from Reagan Library.
For some strange reason Smith has used the fact that Garcia was a military pilot against him in the campaign as if that somehow makes him unqualified to hold elected office.
It’s a Vote By Mail election and Garcia will win by a large margin.
None of them were fighter pilots.
Gosh, even Katie Hill endorsed Christy Smith! Mike Garcia is a great guy. The Republican problem here, as it will be in every other race this yer, will be BALLOT HARVESTING. Plus whatever means the left is going to spring on us to cheat their way THIS TIME into winning. (Theres always something new, isnt there?)
In an aside, Mark Kelly is also pretending he will be an Independent voice for Arizona. That is what Sinema said 2 years ago, too. Hard core Leftists who havent held political office and cannot be pinned down on how they would actually vote. One thing we KNOW about Mr Giffords is that he will take your guns away. He has made that perfectly clear over the last decade or so.
And not only will we in Maricopa County have to fight the ballot harvesting (it IS illegal in Az, but no matter. When have the Dems ever cared about following the Law?), we will be fighting the Uber Leftist Fontes, OurRevolutions candidate that won the County Recorder seat in 2016. Look for Kelly to win, even though he wont win IF only LEGAL votes are counted.
Are you sure that Smith has no kink?
With mail in ballots Smith will get more votes than there are people in that district. And if need be they’ll be pouring in for weeks after they count up Garcia’s ballots.
.
??
What was McCsin flying when he was shot down over Nam?
Bush flew F4s. Whst fl you think the F stood for? B
Sorry H w flew a dive bomber
Misread which Bush
Newbie trying to discourage voting?
Polls have showed him with a lead.
In fact, dems have said... we might lose the seat now, but we’ll get it back in November.
If she wins Im sure well find out.
A4 Skyhawk.
The ballots returned so far seem to favor Garcia. As of this week, 32 percent of registered Republicans, 20 percent of registered Democrats and 15 percent of registered independents had voted, according to Mitchells data.
Democrats are setting expectations low for the special election, citing the historically low turnout by their voters in these one-off contests, and setting their sights on November when the presidency will be decided.
article and voting information is from May 6th...
Polls have shown Garcia in the lead and thats why I predict that he will win.
Bush most certainly one, as was McCain. Regardless of your feelings about those men they were fighter pilots.
In Chronological order:
George McGovern was a USAAF B-24 Liberator bomber pilot in WW2, flying missions out of Italy.
George H. W. Bush was a Navy pilot flying the Grumman TBF/TBM Avenger Torpedo plane, it also carried bombs but was not designed as a dive bomber (i.e. like the Douglas Dauntless) off the the aircraft carrier San Jacinto.
McCain flew the Douglas A4 Skyhawk attack aircraft.
George W. Bush, Texas ARNG, flew the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger interceptor. It was a fighter designed to intercept and shoot down enemy bombers flying over the US. It was a dangerous plane to fly. A squadron or wing of F-102’s were deployed to Vietnam around 1965, but were withdrawn after it was decided the North Vietnamese didn’t have an air threat to South Vietnam. G. W. Bush did all of his flying in the US.
