Great! Then I think we agree for the most part, except that I am going out a bit on a limb and suggesting that perhaps we actually do now know, at least in many parts of the US. The IHME’s confidence intervals for NY and MI, for example, are remarkably tight and with good reason. These states peaked high and early and have been trending down pretty impressively.
I used to manage large call centers. We would absorb a new bank every three months or so. The first pass at call projections—using the incoming banks statistics were always wrong. They did not have enough staff or enough lines, or they simply didn’t know how to forecast.
Within two months we were wishing a percent on our projections. Controlling and correcting the variables is always an iterative.
People who either don’t understand complex systems or predictive models are the ones saying, “ The model lied.” That is also indicative of other psychological issues, but we won’t address them here.

So let’s take the higher figure for the moment: what does that tell us? Well, for one thing, the Red Flu won’t overwhelm our hospitals or the rest of the medical system.
