A Harvard homeschool expert says he's 'not convinced schools should ever have closed'

After much deliberation, most schools across the US made the tough decision in March to close their doors and move to a remote learning platform to help stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Despite the overwhelming consensus to shut down, James Dwyer, a visiting professor at Harvard Law School — who co-authored a book on the history of homeschooling and its shortcomings — doesn't think that was the right choice, since it could inevitably lead to children falling behind academically and potentially enduring abuse from adults in the home.

Homeschooling can foster an environment for abuse. A 2014 study found that 47% of school-age victims had been homeschooled and 29% had never been enrolled in school.

not interested enough in the so-called “study” to bother looking it up. however, in Australia, where we have -

“Australia, pop. 25 million, 102 deaths, 3 under age 60. 5 cases in ICU at present”

the schools have been closed for weeks. some State Govts refused to re-open, despite the Federal Health guy (who said Australia could have up to 150,000 deaths) saying they should. now they have re-opened and surprise, surprise, we immediately had FakeNewsMSM make a big deal out of:

Tweet: Thomas O’Brien, (Murdoch’s Australian) Sky News, Canberra Bureau Chief
BREAKING: Confirmation St Ignatius College, Riverview is heading into lockdown due to a confirmed COVID Case. Day Students asked to leave the school immediatley and borders are returning to their accommodation. Lessons were interrupted by a ***lockdown alarm. Email below.
All staff and students are being asked to remain in place, before a social distance ‘evacuation’ via a Sporting Field as per usual Fire Drill procedure. Day Students will then return home and boarders will return to their accommodation.

Tweet: Thomas O’Brien, (Murdoch’s Australian) Sky News, Canberra Bureau Chief
Deep clean of St Ignatius’ Senior School will occur Thursday and Friday, with no entry permitted to staff & students. Years 7, 11 & 12 will learn from home - Junior Campus across the road is open for Years 5 and 6. Face-to-face will resume Monday May 25. Contacts being traced.

now we have this new story behind paywall (no other media is reporting the full quote and none, including this one, is clarifying if it refers to the Tuesday 19 May St. Ignatius student in the above tweets).
the media would love if there’s a school outbreak and they are closed down again. it’s shocking we have as much or more media alarmism as countries with tens of thousands of deaths:

26 May: The Australian: A secondary student who was suspected to be COVID-19 positive after attending school last Tuesday has returned a negative result, saving NSW Health the trouble of shutting down his school and contract tracing.
NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said false positives will occasionally occur as widespread testing of people with flu-like symptoms continues...

What expertise do LAWYERS have to dictate educational policy?

The same expertise that LAWYERS Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee had to recruit Norma McCorvey, whom they despised, to be their Judas goat in Roe v. Wade.

Abortion wasn’t on the map, politically, when they sued to effect in LITIGATION something that had no traction in POLITICS.

Social engineers in powdered wigs, telling the rest of us how to live.

amplifying why it is ludicrous a country as huge as Australia, with such a dispersed population - most people have never come close to a covid-infected person - & 62+ percent of cases were acquired overseas, has the media talking 24/7 of once-in-a-century health crisis and every ad on TV & radio, commercial or public service, is covid disaster this or that.

yet in 2017 and 2019 we had 1,181 and 902 deaths respectively; no vaccine ready last year & hospitals in south-east Queensland were on yellow alert for days, having been overwhelmed by flu patients.

yet media never mentioned it and there weren’t even warnings to wash your hands, much less a lockdown.
this year the Australian economy has been destroyed why?

11 Feb 2020: ABC Australia: Flu season which struck down 310,000 Australians ‘worst on record’ due to early outbreaks
ABC Sunshine Coast / By Tara Cassidy
Last year, Australia experienced its worst flu season on record, with more than 310,000 people presenting to hospital and health services nationwide.
The figure is seven times greater than Australia’s previous 18-year average...

Queensland Health Minister, Stephen Miles, said the intense season put a major strain on hospital and health services nationwide, which would have to incorporate early outbreaks into future planning.
“Certainly the levels we saw, it took a very high toll on the community and the health system,” he said...

“I wouldn’t say the vaccine had too much of an impact on that [severe season last year], the season was already in the starter gates and running before most vaccines were even given out,” he said.
“Given the significant number of cases in March and April — the vaccine isn’t even available during that time, and it normally takes a couple of weeks after being vaccinated to reach peak immunity...

While 2019 saw the highest number of influenza cases across the country, 2017 still holds the record for the highest number of flu-related deaths, with over 1,100 cases.
Last year there were over 900 influenza linked deaths in Australia.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-11/early-outbreaks-to-blame-for-worst-flu-season-on-record/11949320

ABC rounded of 2017 deaths to 1,100, but it was 1,181!

28 Feb 2020: Health Hub: 2019 Flu Season: 2nd worst on record
The median age of deaths notified was 86 years (but ranged from under 12 months of age to 102 years).

28 Apr 2020: HelloCareMail: Why are so many aged care workers opposed to the flu vaccine?
By Caroline Egan
According to the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, Australia had 312,978 confirmed cases of the flu in 2019. There were almost 1,000 – 902 – deaths, just down from 1,181 deaths in the 2017.
On average, around 400 Australians die from the flu every year, with the elderly, unwell and the very young most at risk.

I was really surprised when Laura Ingraham put the blast on Homeschooling in one of her recent shows. Her monologue sounded like it could have been written by the NEA.

When an article begins with “Harvard expert” I stop reading. Harvard carries no weight and has 0 credibility.

Schools are the only thing that should have closed during this farce. Kids don’t understand hygiene and most viruses spread from school kids to others.

They are way more afraid of losing control over the kids than they are of them getting sick or making others sick.

There was not much deliberation, it seemed more like a cascading series of closures that happened long ago. Utterly foolhardy. Now, in January, it seemed China was doomed by the virus and we would be too. The whole thing is odd.

She was a speechwriter for Ronald Reagan and clerked for Clarence Thomas. Her own brother called her a monster because of her views on homosexuality. As far as I know she has never worked for or with the Bushes. Pretty good bonafides for a Wolf. That’s why I was so surprised to hear her view on Homeschooling. I would have thought she wouldn’t want her kids anywhere near a public school.

The schools can revoke that bad decision made in March by reopening the schools on July 1 so the kids can catch up on what they did not learn during March, April, and May.

You know, most anti-lockdown FReepers should really study the increasingly panicked work of this Harvard anti-homeschooling group.

Something good is going on with decreased exposure to public schools.

Something they are very worried about.

"Harvard carries no weight and has 0 credibility."

I dunno...most of the politically correct promulgators seem to carry quite a bit of excess avoirdupois, judging from their photos.

Agree on credibility.

Maybe someone should ask teachers about what is going on. Divorced Parents are fighting more and kids passed around are really stressed by the whole mess. Open the schools NOW.

If Harvard professors don’t like homeschooling, they can keep sending their kids to expensive private schools.

But the REAL QUESTION is what has Harvard or any other university accomplished since they opened up their ‘Departments of Education’? Where do our schools stand compared to the rest of the world? Where were they BEFORE our universities felt some kind of weird need to become the gatekeepers for educating our kids?

We don’t hear these questions, and never will. Instead millions of otherwise conservative parents will CONTINUE to send their children to these government institutions, since they are, after all, ‘free’, at least relative to the alternatives.
