House Republicans sue to stop Pelosi's designated-voter plans

House Republicans asked a federal judge Tuesday to intervene and block Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s designated-voter plans, which would allow members to give cast votes on legislation on the House floor by proxy during the coronavirus crisis.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the top Republican, said proxy-voting — which was expected to be used for the first time ever in votes this week — breaks with 231 years of House history.

Under the new rules, which Mrs. Pelosi pushed through the chamber earlier this month, lawmakers are allowed to designate a colleague to vote in their stead during floor action. As of Tuesday evening 59 Democrats had already submitted their proxies, with one lawmaker named the designated voter by five others.

“Ultimately, as few as 20 members could control the vote of over 220 members under this rule for the foreseeable future,” Mr. McCarthy said. “That is not only irresponsible leadership, it is patently unconstitutional, as 230 years of Congressional history and Supreme Court precedent make abundantly clear.”

Mrs. Pelosi called the lawsuit a “sad stunt” and said it was an attempt to delay Democrats from passing coronavirus legislation.

“As our nation approaches the heartbreaking milestone of 100,000 lives lost to COVID-19, House Republicans must stop their dangerous obstruction and join Democrats to save lives, defeat the virus and grow the economy,” the California Democrat said.

Is it sadder than “Judge” Sullivan’s attempt to delay General Flynn’s dismissal of charges by accepting amicus briefs in a criminal case, Nancy?

So now.....

Someone else has to vote on a bill that your legislator votes on to find out what's in it? Did I get it right?

Me thinks this is just a pandering to the base moment for the GOP reps as the courts are not getting into the middle of a rules fight. Pelosi’s p!ans are unethical, but the House sets its own rules and unfortunately elections have consequences.

I wish Trump would exercise his right to drag all the awol House members back to DC. He has that constitutional power. Perhaps he’s just awaiting the optimal time to use it.

This is more than a rule change. This is allowing a Representative to cast more than one vote.

To me piglosi’s plan is unconstitutional because it denies constituents the right to elected representation in the house.

This isn’t about the vote-by-mail. That’s a separate issue that is just as dire. Legal action should be taken to prevent vote by mail.

Separation of powers.

Judge(s) will likely let the ruling stand, as the majority has the right to set rules for each chamber of Congress.

Didn’t something like this happen during the Kavanaugh voting? A Repub had to be in his home state and someone else had to cast his vote. Of course they weren’t voting on legislation.

"Mr. McCarthy said. “That is not only irresponsible leadership, it is patently unconstitutional [emphasis added], as 230 years of Congressional history and Supreme Court precedent make abundantly clear.”"

More specifically, the proposed proxy vote ultimately effectively nullifies the express constitutional power of citizens to kick corrupt lawmakers out of office imo.

"Article I, Section 2, Clause 1: The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People of the several States [emphasis added], and the Electors in each State shall have the Qualifications requisite for Electors of the most numerous Branch of the State Legislature."

Send "Orange Man Bad" federal and state government Democrats and RINOs home in November!

Supporting PDJT with new patriot federal and state government leaders that will promise to fully support his already excellent work for MAGA and stopping SARS-CoV-2 will effectively give fast-working Trump a "third term" in office imo.

...Squeaker Nancy Pelosi’s designated-voter plans, which would allow members to give cast votes on legislation on the House floor by proxy...

One suspects that the tragically ironically named "Democratic" party has the same "proxy" ideas in mind for general elections. Coming to a precinct near you.
