Homeschool organization says public schools are blocking parents from withdrawing kids
Fox News ^ | May 28, 2020 | Caleb Parke

Parents in several states nationwide are "shocked" to find they can't withdraw their children from public school, the largest U.S. legal organization for homeschool families told Fox News.

Coronavirus restrictions hit public schools especially hard and, with no clear end in sight, the loss of students only adds to the already vulnerable loss in funds.

A RealClear Opinion Research survey shows that 40 percent of families are more likely to homeschool when lockdown restrictions lift, a significant increase from the 2.5 million parents who were educating their kids at home before stay-at-home orders were put in place.

Thanks for the excellent insights! Yes, what you said all sounds plausible and rational.

The amount of time wasted in school echoes the incredible economic waste we see in all government institutions. There is a fixed amount of time to fill, based on teacher contracts for “hours” to earn their living, and they will fill it with something, usually some empty activity.

I can remember when in the sixth grade in the ‘70’s, we were force-bused across town to another ethnic area to attend school for the year. The amount of time needed to get up earlier for the bus trek to school was enormous when you added it all up. It probably added a couple of extra hours every week that were not spent learning or spending it in family time, hours that would not have been lost if I had at least been allowed to attend my neighborhood school with was a couple of blocks away. Forced “diversity” is always expensive, and the dividends, if any, are meager.

And I can understand the “pass down” concept very well. My sister took up violin early in school, and before I knew it, my mother was playing it too. We’d play “school” in our spare time with the older siblings “showing off” their newfound knowledge to the younger ones. it was very challenging and motivating.

If you happen to come across the curriculum they are using, please PM, or ping me.

Thanks :-)

Joining HSLDA before doing anything is very sound advice.

We did that some 25 years ago. Never regretted the peace of mind that brought.

they cannot stop it...certainly not in TX
All you have to do is send an e-mail to principal & have a witness included on the communication.
There are hybrid models where you homeschool 2-3 days at home and have 2 campus days.

Withdraw them anyway.

Dare them to do anything about it.

Exactly. This is the only answer.

It was inevitable. School districts get paid for every kid’s head in the classroom. They’re not gonna let that golden goose go.

I’m completely with you, but I can predict what they will TRY to do.

We don't get as much coverage, but homeschoolers have been VERY effective at moving the law in the other direction. It is like the gun rights supporters only with a much greater percentage of women. We can and do turn out hundreds to school board meetings, city councils, and the state legislators when there is a real threat.

Some states already have onerous reporting requirements and hoops to jump through (New York and Rhode Island come to mind). Some states have few regulations due to court decisions (e.g. Illinois). We raised three children in Illinois for 12 years, and we didn't have to so much as tell Illinois we were homeschooling. We just had to put in a certain number of school days, teach a set of reasonable subjects required, and teach in the English language. HSLDA swoops in whenever a bureaucrat or an expansively-minded school board goes outside of the boundaries of the state's law. Lots of info on their website hslda.org.

The reality is that you might need to move to a free state in order to escape the communists.

That would be a reason to file withdrawals sooner rather than later.

The pass down is real. My wife used to complain that 7th grade math to my daughter, the four year old was playing with his Buzz Lightyear action figure and answering the questions.

Buzz Lightyear inspired him to become an aerospace engineer and join the space program and yea, he’s a little geeked this week.
