There is a character used in German writing called a scharfes-S or eszett (lit. “sharp S”). It looks like a capital B or Greek “beta”, and is used to represent a long-S or -SZ sound in front of a vowel. In more recent years the trend has been to replace it with “ss” in writing, and apparently Switzerland has completely phased out its use.
This key sounds more like a high-speed/professional-grade substitution for the eszett character.
In addition, I looked online at several pictures of vintage German typewriters, and *none* of them had an “SS” key like the author describes.
Likely you already have a detailed understanding of the Frankfurt School. But if not, please do a study of the Frankfurt School. Members of that school like Eric Fromm and Herbert Marcuse were regular reading in our college days. Their theory is behind the cultural marxism currently dominant on the college campuses.

Weinstein predicted that the movement that afflicted this small liberal arts college then would go nationwide. He told Joe Rogan as much a year ago. So Rogan had him back on last week.
Weinstein went further. He said that the radicals now are explicitly about “disassembling the very things that make the west marvelous. It is anti science. It is anti STEM on the basis it claims that science is racist—inherently.”
He goes on to talk about how the practitioners are cultural marxists of the frankfurt school. Their aim is to destroy the sciences in the universities because they are inherently racist.
