Just speculation, but I would guess that McClain was classified a ‘high functioning’ autistic by Social Services. We have a highly functional autistic person in our family. So I'm well aware of their condition and limitations. The tragedy really is to expect officers to distinguish between drug addicts speech and those with mental issues, who BTW often have both.
