The coronavirus has mutated to become more infectious. Does that mean it will become more or less lethal? And what implication does it have for a vaccine and herd immunity?

My only thought is if clothe underwear does not stop the spread of a fart, how is a clothe mask going to stop the spread of a virus?

Are you saying that there is such a thing as “farticles”?

To summarize - they still don’t understand covid-19 and are still trying to figure it out. Check back in a few months.

It is a great question: “Does that mean it will become more or less lethal?”

First the number of beds being used are for elected surgeries and Covid-19. There is a backlog of elected surgeries that makes this number high. Covid is a small percentage, it is both combine together that is putting a burden on the hospitals.

It could become less lethal; the research is not done yet. However, if it is more infectious and more young people are taking up bed spaces in hospitals, that reduce bed space available for other surgeries costing lives due to other health issues. The last coronavirus mutated away; this could still happen.

(Me assuming) Increase in number of infected increases the number of bed spaces being used even if it is less lethal. I think the new treatement requires IV drip in the hospital. They need to start using hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine again to prevent the hospital stay. There is now a peer review proof this drug works.

Another good question: “what implication does it have for a vaccine and herd immunity”

There are some reports the antibodies are disappearing in people that were infected in Spain. Hopefully, that is not the case. If it is the vaccine would only work for so many months. Too early to tell, they will have to research this more.

IMHO....I believe they know one thing....That it is so specific in so many ways that they have no doubt that it was created in a lab.

Of course, they will NEVER tell you that. That would make it a Kung Fu virus.

Likely the REAL reason behind mask mandates. Gotta keep it around long enough for guys like Fauci to CASH IN on their corruption.

“The coronavirus has mutated to become more infectious.“

While this is possible, it is highly unlikely. When a virus replicates, the replication is never perfect. Some “mutations” occur. But they are vastly detrimental to the virus not helpful. They use the word mutate to scare everyone. Mutation automatically brings to mind horrible powerful transformations. Quite simply mutation is an error in replication. Think of it as a copy from a copying machine. Now make a copy of that copy. Then a copy of that copy. Those are “mutations” and rarely do they get better with replication.

This is absolute hogwash. Numbers are up due to MASSIVE testing. Good thing is deaths are plummeting. In a word, what you are seeing, is the development of herd immunity. This thing is over, now we wait to see if the mini dictators will allow the fat lady to sing....

"There are some reports the antibodies are disappearing in people that were infected in Spain."

Antibodies aren't the long term defense against a virus. Their levels are expected to drop post infection. The question is whether Memory B-cells remain that are specific to SARS-CoV-2. Their role is to pump out tons of antibodies should the body re-encounter SARS-CoV-2 again in the future. As long as those Memory B-cells are there and working, the measured level of antibodies don't really matter. I don't think anybody knows about the Memory B-cells with this yet. That's the big question when we talk about longer term (>6 months) immunity. That and the mutation rate of the virus, which so far has been remarkably low. That's a great thing for us.

Thanks I did know about the Memory B-cells job of pumping out antibodies in the future.

"Those are “mutations” and rarely do they get better with replication."

While it's true that the vast majority of mutations are not for the better, something like a virus has numbers on its side. Each cell infected will produce tens of thousands of viruses before its death. Within days, your body can host over 100,000,000,000,000 copies of the virus. If 0.0001% of those are imperfect copies, that's 100 million mutations. If 0.00001% of those are good, that's 10 good (for the virus, bad for us) mutations.

In a population of 1,000,000 infected people, that's 10 million good (for the virus) mutations. The mutation percentages are just for giggles, but the number of virus copies in a human body (100 trillion within days) is based on actual Influenza numbers. Every person infected provides hundreds of trillions of opportunities for a virus to make the right "error" in copying that makes it far worse for us. That's why a vaccine is the safest route to herd immunity.

One way of looking at herd immunity is that we are, through natural transmission, using the replication-weakened coronavirus as the vaccine. The mutations occur locally and then (through reinfection) protect against the more potent unmutated strain which is trying to spread in parallel.

There’s a great video giving a basic overview of how the human immune system works here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQGOcOUBi6s

It’s an incredibly complex and impressive defense against infection.

I was raised on old sci fi movies, so when I hear mutations I think of the 50-foot woman or giant ants. :-)
