A driver who struck and killing a Seattle woman with a car during a protest Saturday was charged Wednesday with vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and reckless driving, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

Dawit Kelete is being held with bail set at $1.2 million and is expected to remain in jail, according to the prosecuting attorney’s office.

The crash is still being investigated by State Patrol and the FBI and the prosecuting attorney’s office said it may add or amend charges based on the investigation.

"Today the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office filed charges against Dawit Kelete for the crash that killed one person and seriously injured another the morning of July 4 on southbound Interstate 5 in Seattle. Should sue the state for endangering his welfare.

This Black Life Matters.

It’s illegal to walk on an Interstate highway so the police were abetting a crime by letting them be there. Any decent lawyer should be able to get this throw out.

I don’t see it...he was on a major highway....how was he to know that some rioters were parking their vehicles illegally in the middle of the road and how was he to know that when he swerved to miss them, he hit two other idiots hiden behind the van....

I would think the police had not closed the freeway - there would have been real barricades, police cars blocking the protesters, off ramps closed. The barricade was ‘homemade.’ No safety vests. Some comment mentioned he was high on percoset tho.

The guy deliberately entered the highway via an offramp to circumvent the police blocking the other legal methods... Sorry, but I disagree with most here, the black Jag driver is guilty of something.

“I’ve been having fun on FB posting that the two that were hit and flew through the air should be charged with “Leaving the scene of an accident”.”

Or not having valid pilot licenses.

well, that’s true, but so did the 5 cars that were blocking the road (that is, get on the freeway illegally)

curiously I never have seen that mentioned

If he was running from cops and high on something I would make the charge manslaughter.

A reasonable person would have seen this idiot parade.

He did ram thru pretty damn hard.

"...charged Wednesday." Good. Seems like a clear case to me. The loser accelerated his car and pointed his car at pedestrians. If the loser was ethical, then he would have slowed down, pulled over and asked the police how to get off the freeway. In other news, the loser pedestrians on the freeway should have stayed closer to the police cars, since some lanes were still open. Funny how artists had a glass of wine on the 405 freeway near Studio City in July 2011 when the new overpass was installed.

One more question....

Was he going the wrong direction?

Might I note in passing that the protesters' "safe space" ...wasn't.

There is a reason Moms tell their kids not to play on the freeway.

It is not merely a relic of barbaric cis-het patriarchical yada blah blah.

“Protesters in Seattle gathered on the highway, which had been closed for the demonstration”

So was there a planned pre-approved closure for the demonstration? Or was the city just reacting to lawlessness?

Comes down to if you are breaking the law and being very stupid (wearing black at night on a major highway), is the driver responsible if he hits you?

There almost has to be case law on this absolving the driver.

It don’t matter if he came down a freeway embankment to gain access to the fwy. The victims/family of the victims attorney will advise them to go after the city/state whoever allowed and or sponsored this chaos of allowing people to play on the freeways.

It’s where the deep pockets are as well. They’ll pay big.

Apparently, it was a woman and a man, posing as a woman. Taylor said he/she/it was “non-binary”.
